Biography:

Gouranga Chakraborty, better known by his stage name Mithun Chakraborty, was an Indian actor, producer, and politician who primarily worked in Bengali and Hindi-language movies. He was born on June 16, 1950. He formerly served as a member of the Rajya Sabha. Three National Film Awards for best actor have been given to him.

In the art-house drama Mrigayaa from 1976, Chakraborty made his acting debut and went on to win his first National Film Award for Best Actor. The 1982 movie Disco Dancer, starring Chakraborty as Jimmy, was a box office hit in both India and the Soviet Union and was the first to earn Rs. 100 crore in India.

Along with Disco Dancer, Chakraborty’s roles in movies like Surakksha, Sahhas, Wardat, Wanted, Boxer, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Ghulami, Pyari Behna, Avinash, Dance Dance, Prem Pratigyaa, Mujrim, Agneepath, Ravan Raaj, and Jallaad are also fondly recalled. For his performance as Krishnan Iyer Nariyal Paniwala in the movie Agneepath, he received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1991. He went on to win two more National Film Awards for his roles in Swami Vivekananda (1998) and Tahader Katha (1992). More than 350 movies, including Bengali, Hindi, Odia, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Punjabi ones, feature Chakraborty. The Limca Book of Records lists him as having released 19 films as the star, a record that has not been surpassed.

In Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India, on June 16, 1950, Mithun Chakraborty was born into a Bengali Hindu household to Basanta Kumar Chakraborty (1925-2020) and Shanti Rani Chakraborty (1930-2023). He attended Oriental Seminary before receiving his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Scottish Church College in Kolkata after completing his studies there. After that, he went to the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where he received his degree. Before going into the movie business, he was a Naxalite. Tragically, though, his family suffered tragedy when his only brother was electrocuted and killed in an accident. Despite the significant risk to his own life, he went back to his family and broke away from the Naxalite movement. He made acquainted with Ravi Ranjan, a prominent Naxalite, back when he was one.

Following his nomination by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal Rajya Sabha Assembly Polls that were held on February 7, 2014, Chakraborty became a member of parliament[81]. He submitted his resignation as a Rajya Sabha MP on December 26, 2016. Prior to the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, on March 7, 2021, Chakraborty joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Kailash Vijayvargiya and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
