Dulquer Salmaan is an actor, playback singer, and producer best known for his roles in Malayalam-language films. He has also appeared in a few Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu films. He has won four South Filmfare Awards and one Kerala State Film Award. Salmaan has been acknowledged in the media as a style icon and motor enthusiast. He owns numerous enterprises and backs a number of social causes.
Salmaan agreed to play the part of criminal Harilal in Srinath Rajendran’s debut crime movie Second Show (2012) in 2011. Salmaan said in an interview that he deliberately chose to make a “unconventional introduction with a lot of rookies” because he believed that “..when an actor debuts, he has to earn the right to be a hero and not receive it by a shortcut method. Mixed reviews were given to the movie.
Salmaan’s next role was in Anwar Rasheed’s 2012 film Ustad Hotel. The movie was a huge financial success at the box office and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Additionally, he received high accolades for how he portrayed aspiring chef Faizy . He performed well.
In 2014, Salmaan accepted another romantic role opposite Nazriya Nazim in Salalah Mobiles; like Pattam Pole, Salalah Mobiles did not bring much success to the actor. Salmaan’s next appearance was in the Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014). The Malayalam version Samsaaram Aarogyathinu Haanikaram was poorly received while the Tamil version received positive reviews and became a sleeper hit. IANS said that Salmaan was “a joy to watch” and added, “he earns extra points for dubbing his voice and speaking flawless Tamil. He won the Filmfare Award for his Best Male Debut – Tamil performance in the film.
In Anjali Menon’s romantic comedy-drama Bangalore Days (2014), Salmaan played Arjun’s cousins, Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim. The film received positive reviews and became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time, grossing approximately ₹500 million (US$6.3 million). Later that year, she starred opposite Unni Mukundan in Lal Jose’s Vikramadithyan. He then starred in Renjith’s period drama Njaan (2014), which he called his “toughest film ever”. His performance received positive reviews and earned him several accolades, including a second Best Actor – Malayalam nomination at Filmfare.
In 2015, he starred opposite Nithya Menen in two films – Jenus Mohamed’s romantic comedy 100 Days of Love and Mani Ratnam’s Tamil romantic drama O Kadhal Kanmani. The Hindu critic Baradwaj Rangan wrote of Salman’s performance, “Dulquer Salmaan ticks all the boxes on the ‘Could you be the next Madhavan?'” questionnaire, although he believed that the film mostly belonged to Menen. Salmaan next starred in Charlie (2015), starring Martin Prakkat. The film won eight Kerala State Film Awards, including Best Actor for Salmaan and his third nomination for Best Actor – Malayalam at Filmfare.
Salmaan reunited with Sameer Thahir for his first release Kali in 2016 starring Sai Pallavi. When the film was released, it earned the highest opening day box office for a Malayalam film. He then starred in Rajeev Ravi’s action drama Kammatipaadam (2016). The film was critically acclaimed and became his third consecutive financial success in two years. He jointly won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics) – Malayalam for his participation in both the films.
In 2019, he starred as Oru Yamada in Premakadha, a Malayalam romantic comedy directed by B.C. Noufal. which was a big failure. After Karwaan, Salman’s next Bollywood film The Zoya Factor was released in September 2019. Abhishek Sharma’s film adaptation of Anuja Chauhan’s novel Zoya Factor did not do well at the box office, but Salman’s performance was appreciated. The Times of India stated, “From playful to intense, Dulquer steals the show as he is absolutely brilliant in his role. Salma’s 2020 projects included the Tamil film Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal, which earned her her first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In 2020, his production company Wayfarer Films began operations. Her first project released as a producer and actor was the family drama Varane Avashyamund in which she starred alongside Suresh Gopi, Shobana and Kalyani Priyadarshan. The film hit the screens in 2020 and received positive reviews.
His other production project is Shamzu Zayba’s romantic comedy Maniyarayile Ashoka, produced through his production company Wayfarer Films, starring Jacob Gregory and Anupama Parameswaran. He starred in the crime thriller Kurup (2021) starring Sukumara Kurup. It is also his third production venture which became the highest grossing Malayalam film of 2021 and the highest grossing film of his career.
In March 2022, his film Salute was released on SonyLIV. She next starred opposite Mrunal Thakur in the Telugu period romantic drama Sita Ramam. Despite being of Malayalam origin, he was dubbed in all the languages in which the film was released, making him a prominent pan-Indian actor in the film. The film and his performance received widespread critical acclaim and the film turned out to be a major commercial success at the box office. His Bollywood psychological crime thriller Chup: Revenge of the Artisti hits theaters in September 2022.
