TheatreSlumdog Millionaire is a British drama film loosely adapted from the novel Q & A (2005) by Indian author Vikas Swarup. The film tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old from the Juhu slums of Mumbai, played by Dev Patel in his film debut. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy, the movie was filmed in India and produced by Christian Colson, with Loveleen Tandan credited as co-director.
The plot follows Jamal as a contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian-Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? He astonishes everyone by correctly answering all the questions, winning ₹1 crore and stands on the verge of winning the grand prize of ₹2 crore. Accused of cheating, Jamal explains to the police how his life experiences enabled him to answer each question.
After premiering at the Telluride Film Festival and screening at the Toronto International Film Festival and the London Film Festival, Slumdog Millionaire was released nationwide in the UK on 9 January 2009 and in India on 23 January 2009, where it achieved significant success and recognition.
In the US, it was released on 25 December 2008. The film became a sleeper hit, earning widespread acclaim for its storyline, soundtrack, cinematography, editing, direction, and performances, particularly Patel’s.
It received 10 Academy Award nominations in 2009 and won 8, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Additionally, it won seven BAFTA Awards, five Critics’ Choice Awards, and four Golden Globes. However, the reception in India and among the Indian diaspora was mixed, with some controversy over its portrayal of poverty and other issues.
