“Ranarangam,” translated as “Battlefield,” is a 2019 Telugu-language action crime film crafted by the skilled hands of Sudheer Varma, serving as both its writer and director. Under the banner Sithara Entertainments, Suryadevara Naga Vamsi produced this cinematic venture, starring Sharwanand, Kajal Aggarwal, and Kalyani Priyadarshan in pivotal roles. The film adopts a non-linear narrative structure, skillfully weaving the tale of the ascent of Deva, a formidable gangster and influential liquor baron.
Released on August 15, 2019, “Ranarangam” garnered mixed reviews from both critics and audiences alike, despite its robust initial reception, ultimately marking its commercial performance as a failure at the box office. The storyline introduces Sanjay, a contractor in Spain, seeking assistance from a Visakhapatnam MLA to persuade liquor baron Deva to clear a slum area for the construction of the Vizag International Airport. Deva’s refusal sets the stage for a narrative journey that unfolds in a non-linear fashion.
The narrative then shifts to 1990 in Visakhapatnam, where Deva and his friends engage in the black market sale of movie tickets. Deva’s life takes a turn when he falls in love with Gita. The announcement of alcohol prohibition in 1995 prompts Deva to venture into the illegal liquor trade, smuggling alcohol from Orissa into the city and establishing his criminal empire. This decision pits him against another illegal liquor baron and MLA, Simhachalam.
The power dynamics undergo a gradual shift as Deva, upon release from a six-month imprisonment for smuggling, retaliates by attacking Simhachalam’s liquor consignment and bribing higher officials previously loyal to Simhachalam. In retaliation, Simhachalam orchestrates a devastating bomb blast that claims the life of Deva’s wife, Gita, shortly after giving birth to their daughter, Sahasra. This tragedy fuels Deva’s vengeful rampage, dismantling Simhachalam’s criminal network and forcing him into hiding.
Fast forward to the present, Deva and Sahasra form a connection with Geetha, a doctor, and an assassination attempt on Deva by Sanjay sets off a series of events. Geetha and Sahasra are kidnapped by Simhachalam, setting the stage for a gripping climax. Deva, in a surprising twist, reveals that he had already eliminated Simhachalam, and the orchestrator of the ongoing scam is none other than his trusted ally, Suri. Jealousy and thirst for power drove Suri’s betrayal, culminating in a climactic showdown where Deva triumphs over his adversaries, ultimately returning to Spain with a resolution to his tumultuous saga.
