Theatre“Premaku Velayara,” a 1999 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy film directed by S. V. Krishna Reddy, weaves a tale of love, identity, and ambition. The story revolves around Venkata Narayana, a prominent business tycoon in India, with a net worth of Rs 2,500 crores. His daughter, Madhavi, returns from the US with an MBA, challenging her father’s plans to make her the Managing Director of his companies. Instead, she decides to join his firm as a clerk to learn the business from the ground up, adopting the alias “Malati.”
Enter Manohar, a recent B.Com graduate and Venkata Narayana’s nephew. Manohar soon discovers his family connection and, hoping for an easy path to wealth, sets his sights on marrying Madhavi. However, their paths cross in an unexpected way when Manohar assists a pregnant woman during his journey to Hyderabad, unknowingly helping a friend of Madhavi’s. Despite their brief encounter on the train, Manohar leaves without making any advances.
Manohar eventually lands a job as a dispatch clerk in his uncle’s office. To his surprise, he finds that Madhavi, the enchanting woman from the train, also works there. He reconnects with his college friend Ravi, who now owns the office’s canteen. Meanwhile, Malati (Madhavi) resides on the same building’s ground floor, unbeknownst to Manohar and Ravi.
As fate would have it, Manohar and Ravi eavesdrop on a phone conversation between Malati and her father, leading them to discover Malati’s true identity. Manohar soon falls in love with Madhavi, confessing his feelings to her. However, Venkata Narayana dismisses his daughter’s affection, believing that Manohar is only interested in her wealth. Madhavi is determined to prove her father wrong.
To test Manohar’s intentions, Madhavi stages a drama, pretending to be Malati, a humble fisherman’s daughter. When Manohar fails to acknowledge his love for her, she reveals her true identity and confronts him about his obsession with money. Hurt and disappointed, Manohar admits that he is indeed driven by financial gain.
Now faced with a dilemma, Madhavi has two choices: return to her father defeated or attempt to change Manohar’s materialistic mindset. She chooses the latter, proposing a challenge to Venkata Narayana to reform Manohar within a set deadline.
In the midst of this, Manohar loses his job at Venkata Narayana’s company but decides to start his consultancy business, offering solutions to CEOs facing labor and marketing challenges. Despite his newfound entrepreneurial spirit, he remains enticed by both money and Madhavi’s charm.
As tensions rise, Venkata Narayana seeks revenge on Manohar, planning to announce his daughter’s marriage to him during a New Year’s Eve celebration. However, complications arise as Surya, a film enthusiast and Venkata Narayana’s wife’s younger brother, concocts a hypothetical story, casting Manohar as the villain.
On the fateful night of December 31, 1999, as midnight approaches, Surya kidnaps Manohar, leading to a dramatic confrontation at the New Year’s Eve party. Amidst chaos and revelations, Manohar declares his love for Malati, not realizing that she is, in fact, Madhavi. Venkata Narayana then unveils the truth, and Manohar professes his love for Madhavi, affirming that he desires her heart, not her wealth.
In “Premaku Velayara,” love triumphs over materialism, and the characters navigate a web of deceit and mistaken identities to discover the true value of relationships and genuine affection.
