TheatrePrabhu Deva and M. S. Raju’s action musical dance movie Pournami was released in 2006 in the Telugu language. Rahul Dev, Sindhu Tolani, Charmy, Trisha, and Prabhas are all featured in the movie. Devi Sri Prasad wrote the music, Krishna Reddy edited it, and Venu shot the movie. The movie premiered on April 21, 2006.
The same name of the movie has been translated into Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi as Tridev: Pyar Ki Jung (2008). The 2001 Brazilian film Behind the Sun, starring Rodrigo Santoro, which itself was based from the novel Broken April by Albanian author Ismail Kadare, served as a major inspiration for the movie. In Hampi, the Virupaksha Temple, the elephant stables, and the Stepwell were used for filming.
The story begins in 1953 in a secluded Andhra Pradesh village where Subhramanyam (Chandra Mohan) is teaching his daughter Pournami dancing. He tells her a tale of how the town endured a severe drought for a very long time in 1507. Veda Sastry, a woman from a traditional household, danced in the temple and begged Shiva to grant their community rain. She didn’t stop dancing till she passed away from weariness after seven days and nights. The protracted drought ended when it started to rain. Since then, the village has a custom that every 12 years on that auspicious day, a girl from that dancer’s family, like Pournami’s mother in 1951, should perform in Shiva’s temple.
