Anna De La Vega is an American student who is traveling to the University of Oxford to spend a year studying Victorian poetry. Jamie Davenport splashes her in his old Jaguar sports vehicle on her first day. He will be teaching one of her classes, she learns later. After making fun of each other at first, they have a good time together, including Anna’s first time in a pub. However, it appears that Jamie rejects her at the end of the night, so Anna decides to dance with another man to make him jealous.
After they reconcile and decide to keep things lighthearted, Jamie shows her a beautiful book the following day. Jamie’s close friend Cecilia, whom Anna speaks to, cautions her against it. They become closer over the months, and Jamie eventually extends an invitation to Anna to visit his home.
Jamie discloses that he no longer communicates with his father and that his brother Eddie passed away. Jamie seems aloof in the morning. Anna and her pals go to the Oxford vs. Cambridge boat race in London, but Jamie hasn’t seen her in a week since he’s been studying. But she learns that Cecilia has been busy for a week and that he hasn’t visited the library in weeks.
Cecilia and Jamie, who looks ill and is receiving medical attention, are there when Anna furiously approaches to face him. He calls out to her to go. Jamie tells Anna the truth later. Eddie’s severe, inherited cancer, which is currently plaguing Jamie, had killed his partner, Celia. Anna witnessed his final treatment; his father is upset since he is unable to continue because of the agony. Referencing one of their earliest exchanges, Jamie argues that Anna shouldn’t waste her time on him, stating that he shouldn’t have to endure his suffering alone.
Anna and Jamie meet his parents at the ball after Jamie agrees to take her. In a private conversation, Jamie’s father tries to persuade Anna to bring Jamie back home so he can receive the best care possible. Jamie continues to be contemptuous, and at the end of the day, he is frail and passes out at home. After he is admitted to the hospital to recuperate, Anna notices Jamie’s father outside, distraught. On her birthday, Anna takes Jamie’s automobile to the magnificent house where he was raised, where her friends surprise her with a birthday party. When his father mentions a new medicine, Jamie still stays away from him. He doesn’t want to spend his remaining time in a hospital, though. Eddie passed away at the majestic home, Jamie tells Anna.
Following her current opening, Anna discovers Jamie and his father working together to rebuild a model vehicle that she gave him, just like they used to do when Jamie and Eddie were kids. When Jamie’s sickness is revealed to Anna’s pals, Anna declares her love for him.
Anna tells her mother she is staying in England rather than going back to New York to take her job when she gets a birthday call from her parents. Anna sleeps in a different room while Jamie destroys the model automobile his father and he worked on because he is upset over Anna’s choice that may affect her future.
Jamie does not want Anna to stay, therefore she makes the decision to go back to America. She hasn’t talked to Jamie since graduating. They speak again, and although he worries that Anna may regret staying with him, she wants to stay, and they finally get back together and become close.
Jamie is not responding when Anna wakes up the following morning. A doctor in the hospital informs Jamie that he needs therapy for a dangerous case of pneumonia since the cancer has compromised his immune system. At last, Jamie’s father grants his request and declines. As he dies in her arms, Jamie and Anna dream of traveling together. A time jump reveals that Anna eventually teaches the same class Jamie taught her in after traveling alone throughout Europe.
