Theatre” Moscowin Kavery,” a Tamil romantic drama released in 2010, marked the directorial debut of cinematographer Ravi Varman, who also took charge of the film’s cinematography. With lyrics penned by Vairamuthu and music composed by Thaman, the movie features Rahul Ravindran and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in lead roles, supported by Harsha Vardhan, Santhanam, and Seeman.
Despite the extensive three-year production period, the film faced harsh criticism from reviewers and experienced commercial failure upon its release on August 27, 2010. The narrative revolves around Moscow (Rahul Ravindran) and Kaveri (Samantha Ruth Prabhu), both IT professionals based in Chennai. Kaveri, estranged from her family due to disputes and ensuing violence, finds solace in her relationship with Moscow.
Meanwhile, Moscow, an orphan with ancestral properties in his native village, falls in love with Kaveri. The couple faces differences in opinions, leading to plans of separation. Enter Azhagan (Harsha Vardhan), a notorious criminal on the police’s radar, who plots to murder Moscow and Kaveri. However, timely police intervention results in Azhagan’s arrest, facilitating the reunion of Moscow and Kaveri.
Furthermore, Kaveri reconciles with her estranged father (K. Selva Bharathy) and other family members. The film’s production journey commenced in 2007, with Ravi Varman selecting Samantha as the female lead upon seeing her modeling photos. Rahul Ravindran was also chosen as the male lead. Thaman, despite Moscowin Kavery being his inaugural Tamil project as a composer, had already released several films before the movie hit the screens.
The film’s soundtrack, featuring songs like “Gore Gore,” was released in May 2009. Notably, the tune of the song “Gore Gore” found its way into the 2009 Telugu movie Kick. While Moscowin Kavery holds significance as Ravi Varman’s directorial debut and showcases the early collaboration between Rahul Ravindran and Samantha, its critical reception and commercial outcome underscore the challenges faced by the film during its cinematic journey. The combination of debutants and established talents in the cast and crew contributed to the film’s unique position in the Tamil film landscape.
