Senthamizhan Seeman, born on November 8, 1966, is a multifaceted individual in India, known as a politician, filmmaker, and chief-coordinator of the political party Naam Tamilar Katchi in Tamil Nadu. He passionately advocates for the creation of a vote bank for Tamils, reflecting his commitment to the welfare of his community.
Seeman embarked on his career as a filmmaker in the mid-1990s, contributing to films such as “Panchalankurichi” (1996) and “Veeranadai” (2000). However, the initial setback of his early films made it challenging for him to secure directorial offers, leading to the stalling of several proposed projects in the late 1990s. A significant turning point came with the success of the vigilante film “Thambi” (2006), following which Seeman temporarily shifted focus to supporting roles as an actor in the late 2000s.
In the early 2010s, Seeman ventured into politics, establishing a Tamil nationalist political party, gaining attention for his controversial statements on Indian social issues. Born in Aranaiyur, Tamil Nadu, to Senthamizhan and Annammal, Seeman’s early education took place in Aranayur and Ilayankudi, eventually pursuing his undergraduate degree in economics at Zakir Hussain College in Ilayankudi. His exposure to the ideals of the Dravidian movement during high school and college influenced his decision to move to Chennai to pursue a career in the film industry.
Inspired by directors Bharathiraja and Manivannan, Seeman began his film direction career, directing films like “Panchalankurichi” (1996) and “Iniyavale” (1998) with actor Prabhu and “Veeranadai” (2000) with Sathyaraj and Khushbu. Unfortunately, the failure of these projects made it challenging for Seeman to attract producers for subsequent films, despite working on several proposed projects during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The breakthrough came with the village-based vigilante film “Thambi” (2006), starring Madhavan, which, despite mixed reviews, performed well commercially. However, Seeman’s later directorial release, “Vaazhthugal” (2008), received negative reviews and fared poorly at the box office, impacting his ability to find support for future projects.
In the late 2000s, Seeman faced challenges in securing producers and actors for proposed projects, including “Pagalavan” with Ajith Kumar or Madhavan, and later with Vikram for director Bala’s production studio. Despite numerous attempts, these projects did not materialize, and subsequent efforts with actors like Vijay, Jiiva, Jayam Ravi, Arya, Vishal, Vijay Antony, and Silambarasan also faced obstacles.
Transitioning to acting, Seeman took on supporting roles in films such as “Pallikoodam” (2007) and “Evano Oruvan” (2007). His engagement in the film industry allowed him to address Periyar’s ideology and caste abolition.
Seeman’s political journey became more pronounced in 2008 when he met Velupillai Prabhakaran, advocating against the killings of Tamils during Sri Lanka’s civil war. Subsequently, Seeman faced legal repercussions, including arrest, under the National Security Act, passport block, and state monitoring.
Active in political activism, Seeman founded Naam Tamilar Iyakkam in 2009, evolving it into the political party Naam Tamilar Katchi. He actively campaigned against the Congress party in the 2011 State Assembly elections and continued to be involved in various causes, such as anti-nuclear power plant protests and addressing attacks on Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.
In the 2016 assembly elections, Seeman contested as the Chief Ministerial candidate from the Cuddalore constituency but faced defeat, and his party, Naam Tamilar Katchi, failed to secure any seats.
Seeman’s personal life includes his marriage to Kayalvizhi, daughter of former Speaker K. Kalimuthu, and his association with actress Vijayalakshmi, marked by public disputes and legal issues. Despite various challenges, Seeman remains an influential figure, actively participating in both the film industry and Tamil Nadu politics.
