Mission Majnu

Story:

Mission Majnu is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language spy thriller film directed by Shantanu Bagchi and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Amar Butala, and Garima Mehta. The film, starring Sidharth Malhotra, takes place before and during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani war. Rashmika Mandanna, Parmeet Sethi, Sharib Hashmi, Kumud Mishra, and Rajit Kapur play supporting parts.

The film was delayed several times, initially on May 13, 2022, then on June 10, 2022, before being postponed forever. Finally, the film’s theatrical premiere was cancelled, and it was published directly on Netflix on January 20, 2023.

Plot

Amandeep “Aman” Singh IPS is a deep cover RAW field operative who is in Pakistan on an undercover mission as Tariq Hussain in 1971. Along the journey, Aman falls in love with a blind girl named Nasreen Hussain, and the two marry. India conducted its first nuclear test in May 1974, prompting Pakistan to surreptitiously hurry to create its own nuclear weapon with the assistance of nuclear engineer Abdul Qadeer Khan.

During the 1977 Indian general election campaign, RAW Chief R. N. Kao briefs Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the issue, and she asks him to locate the nuclear facility. Aman is given the mission by Kao. Sharma, Aman’s handler, informs him of his new mission, “Mission Majnu”. Along the journey, Aman encounters two other RAW agents in Pakistan, Aslam Usmaniya and Raman Singh (under the alias Maulvi Saab). Aman gathers evidence that Pakistan is actually developing nuclear weapons.

Following a general election in India, a new government is created, and its new leader, Prime Minister Morarji Desai, believes in relationship building by diplomacy and nonviolent methods, and is opposed to any form of warfare, including surveillance and information collecting. Kao resigns in order to keep the operation in Pakistan running while remaining hidden from the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, Israel is preparing an attack on the Quetta military base, mistaking it for a nuclear weapons site. Aman finds the nuclear site in Kahuta but is unable to get concrete evidence.

Sharma learns that Israel will attack Quetta in 48 hours. Aman returns to Kahuta and takes hair from Army men working in the nuclear site, which he delivers to India undercover, where it is analysed and proven to contain trace quantities of radiation, indicating the presence of plutonium in Kahuta. The Israeli strike on Quetta has been averted. Desai is informed of the situation in light of new facts, and he comments in on Pakistan colleagues and Pakistan’s unwillingness to be trusted. The ISI pursues and murders covert RAW agents operating in Pakistan, including Aman’s coworkers Aslam and Raman.

Aman attempts to flee to Dubai with a pregnant Nasreen, unknowing that ISI agents are pursuing them. Aman distracts ISI agents long enough for Nasreen to board an aviation and fly away unmolested, but he is killed in the process. Nasreen arrives in Dubai and meets Kao at the airport, where she reads a letter from Aman exposing his true name.

Filming

Principal photography began in Lucknow in February 2021, and the film was completed in September 2021.
