TheatreStory:
The Nees, Michael Finch, and Alex Litvak wrote the story for the 2026 American sword and sorcery movie Masters of the Universe, which was directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and David Callaham. It is the second live-action movie version of Mattel’s Masters of the Universe media series, following the 1987 movie. Alongside Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Šhannes Haukur Čhannesson, Kristen Wiig, Morena Baccarin, and Idris Elba, Nicholas Galitzine plays Prince Adam/He-Man. The movie centers on Prince Adam (Galitzine), who returns to Eternia to fulfill his destiny as He-Man and protect his homeland from Skeletor’s (Leto) wicked armies.
In September 2009, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced a new live-action movie alongside Escape Artists, following the postponement of a sequel to the 1987 movie. The rights were transferred to Netflix in January 2022, with Kyle Allen cast as He-Man and the Nee Brothers revealed as filmmakers and co-writers alongside Callaham, after several writer and director changes and Noah Centineo’s casting. The Nee brothers were replaced by Knight when Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights in May 2024. Galitzine was chosen to take Allen’s position that same month, and the remaining cast members were revealed over the course of the year. The majority of the photography took place in London, England, between January and June of 2025.
Masters of the Universe debuted on May 18, 2026, at the TCL Chinese Theatre. It will be released by Amazon MGM Studios in the US on June 5, 2026, and by Sony Pictures Releasing International abroad.
Prince Adam Glenn returns to Eternia with the help of the Sword of Power after a 15-year separation. There, he finds that Skeletor, a formidable warlord and sorcerer, has taken control of his ruined kingdom. Adam must unite with Teela and Man-At-Arms, his closest allies, and accept his true identity as He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, in order to regain his family legacy and save the Earth.
