Master

Story:

“Master” is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language action film written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The movie revolves around JD, an alcoholic teacher, who takes up a temporary teaching job at a juvenile detention center and confronts a ruthless gangster named Bhavani, who exploits children for criminal activities.

The film stars Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles, with Malavika Mohanan, Andrea Jeremiah, Arjun Das, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Gouri G. Kishan, and others in supporting roles. The script was presented to Vijay in May 2019, and after his acceptance, the shooting commenced in October 2019 and concluded in February 2020, taking place in various locations across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Karnataka.

Initially titled “Thalapathy 64,” the film’s official title was announced as “Master” on December 31, 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie’s release was delayed multiple times before finally hitting theaters on January 13, 2021. It was also simultaneously released in Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages under the title “Vijay the Master.”

“Master” received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances, direction, cinematography, soundtrack, and action sequences. However, some critics found the film predictable and overly lengthy. Despite facing challenges in its release, it became a commercial success, grossing approximately ₹220–300 crore and reviving the movie theater business in Tamil Nadu. It also became the first Indian film to top the global box office during its release.
