Theatre“Kammara Sambhavam” is a distinctive Indian Malayalam-language film released in 2018, offering a blend of genres that include satire and thriller. The film, directed by Rathish Ambat and written by Murali Gopy, marks the Malayalam debut of Siddharth. Produced by Gokulam Gopalan, the star-studded cast includes Dileep, Siddharth, Namitha Pramod, Murali Gopy, and Bobby Simha. The storyline is a captivating exploration of political intrigue, historical narratives, and the manipulation of truth.
“Kammara Sambhavam” stands as a cinematic exploration of political machinations, historical twists, and the power of storytelling.
The narrative unfolds as a group of influential liquor barons, affiliated with the Indian Liberation Party (ILP), strategizes to revive the party’s fortunes in the upcoming Kerala state election. Their motive is rooted in securing favorable conditions for their business ventures. To enhance the party’s public image, they devise a plan to create a biopic on Kammaran Nambiar, the party’s patriarch and the last surviving veteran of the Indian independence movement.
Director Pulikeshi is assigned the task of crafting the film based on a chapter from Robert S. Coogan’s book, “Unsung Heroes of India,” which portrays Kammaran as a forgotten freedom fighter. As Pulikeshi delves into the project, he meets the elderly Kammaran, now residing with his son Bose, and listens to his intriguing life story.
Kammaran recounts his past during World War II when he was a shrewd medical practitioner with a penchant for personal gain. Manipulating events to settle personal scores, Kammaran incites violence among villagers, involving a love rivalry with Othenan, clashes with the landlord Kelu, and confrontations with British officers. However, as Kammaran narrates the tale, his health deteriorates, leaving the story incomplete.
The film takes shape according to ILP’s instructions, but Kammaran discovers that the portrayal is vastly different from his actual experiences. The biopic twists facts, presenting Kammaran as a hero fighting against oppression. Shocked by the altered reality, Kammaran faces a dilemma.
The narrative unfolds further, revealing Kammaran’s crucial encounters with historical figures like Netaji (Subhas Chandra Bose) during the Battle of Imphal in 1944. Kammaran’s involvement in forming the ILP and his commitment to social justice become central themes. The film reaches its climax as Kammaran strives to thwart an assassination plot against Mahatma Gandhi, showcasing his courage and dedication.
The success of the film propels the ILP back into power, and an aged Kammaran becomes the Chief Minister of Kerala. Pulikeshi, the director, seeks the truth about Othenan’s fate. Kammaran, however, keeps a dark secret: the brutal killing of Othenan years later when he sought Bhanumathi, Kammaran’s wife. Kammaran chooses not to disclose this grim reality, emphasizing that the movie’s portrayal has become the accepted history.
Kammaran declines to engage in elections despite his followers’ insistence, promising to return when needed. The film raises thought-provoking questions about the manipulation of historical narratives for political gain and the subjective nature of truth in the public consciousness.
