The 2026 Indian Malayalam romantic comedy film Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, which translates to “Bethlehem family unit,” was directed by Girish A. D. and produced by Bhavana Studios, Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan, and Syam Pushkaran. Mamitha Baiju and Nivin Pauly play the main parts in the movie. On August 21, 2026, during the Onam festival season, the movie was released. Both the audience and critics gave it high marks. In 2026, it became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies.
Ashley returns to Kerala in the start of the movie after studying in Ireland for a year and a half. A wedding at the neighboring house overshadows her return, bringing back memories of Justin, the man she had fallen in love with prior to leaving the country. After that, the story goes back two years to describe what happened before they started dating. Ashley, a Mundakkayam college student, relocates to Angamaly with her family because of their financial struggles. Her band, friends, and childhood home are all left behind. Ashley resides with her younger brother Alan and her parents. Her mother has assumed responsibility for a large portion of the family’s affairs, while her father is an unreliable alcoholic. Ashley gets to know the locals in the new neighborhood, including Justin, a bachelor in his mid-thirties who lives next door, and the members of the “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” (local clubs founded at the initiative of local churches). In the neighborhood, Justin is well-known and popular.
Ashley meets Justin, a bachelor in his mid-thirties who lives next door, and other locals who make up the “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” (local clubs founded at the initiative of local churches). In the neighborhood, Justin is well-known and popular. He manages a catering company, assists people with their issues, and helps Joel, his younger brother, with his short film endeavors. In addition, he is a very intelligent, talented, and capable man. He has a strong love for music and used to digitize and distribute it when he was younger.
Ashley learns that Justin enjoys music as much as she does, particularly the American alternative-rock group The Breeders. They become closer since they have similar musical tastes. Knowing that the neighborhood and their families might not approve of their relationship due to their age difference, Ashley and Justin start dating in secret. When they are among other people, Justin asks Ashley to act as if they are strangers. For Ashley, Justin abstains from alcohol. In the meantime, the movie chronicles their surroundings. Joel starts dating someone named Sayoojya, which leads to problems of its own, such as a family dispute with Sayoojya’s eccentric brother Hari and cousins. Ashley’s uncle Alex eventually learns that Ashley and Justin are dating. He discloses the couple’s covert affair to their families and acquaintances since he vehemently opposes the connection.
Ashley’s family, especially her mother, is against her. Ashley’s mother has put a lot of her hope for the family’s future on Ashley after experiencing financial hardship due to her husband’s drinking and unpredictability. She wants her daughter to focus on her education, travel overseas, and eventually provide for the family. In order to get Ashley to break up with Justin, she emotionally blackmails her by threatening to commit suicide. Their relationship collapses due to Ashley’s family’s pressure, Justin’s own insecurity, and the age gap.
Justin acknowledges that Ashley could have to make her own decisions about her future, even if it means losing her mother, and encourages her to fulfill her mother’s desires to send her overseas to support their family. After advising Ashley to travel to Ireland, Justin orders Ashley’s parents to stop mistreating her. After Ashley’s time overseas, the story then shifts back to the present, with her back in Kerala. Joel and Sayoojya’s wedding is happening next door. After their split, Ashley and Justin reunite, which forces them to face the emotions they had attempted to put behind them.
Ashley makes it apparent that she is still upset about the split and hasn’t been able to move on while seated among their circle of friends from Bethlehem Kudumba Unit. Then, it is revealed by Justin’s friends and family that he hasn’t moved on either and hasn’t touched alcohol since she warned him against drinking. Concerned about her future, Justin is still unsure about whether to rekindle their romance. But he realizes he wants to be with Ashley after hearing her express her emotions. Justin makes the decision to quit avoiding his emotions and acknowledge Ashley’s ability to make her own choices. After giving each other a hug, Ashley and Justin decide to tie the knot. Ashley’s parents protest, but they are compelled to acknowledge that she is an adult and cannot live just to satisfy their desires. Ashley and Justin set out on a voyage together in Justin’s red Ford Ikon, which had been there for all of their significant romantic moments.
