TheatreAnthony D’Souza (billed as Tony D’Souza) is the director of the 2016 Indian Hindi biographical sports drama film Azhar. The life of Indian cricketer and former captain of the national team Mohammad Azharuddin served as inspiration for the narrative.
Emraan Hashmi plays the lead in the Sony Pictures Networks production, which is produced by Shobha and Ekta Kapoor. On May 13, 2016, the movie was released globally. With a budget of ₹380 million, the movie did poorly at the box office, earning only ₹508 million in revenue. The movie was criticized as well for its fictitious account of historical events.
Plot
The movie opens with Indian cricketer Azhar making a century in his 99th test match. However, he soon comes under fire for allegedly rigging matches after his name was connected to bookmaker M.K. Sharma, also known as Shaun, who is headquartered in London. The cricket board of India bans him for life. Azhar chooses to use his friend Reddy, a lawyer, to challenge the ban in court.
The narrative jumps back to 1963, when Azhar was born in Hyderabad to a cozy middle-class household. His grandfather encouraged a reserved young Azhar to use his batting prowess to counter his opponents in his aim of Azhar playing 100 Tests for Team India. When young Azhar travels to Mumbai for an Indian team selection match, he learns of his grandfather’s passing on the day of the match. Nevertheless, he plays in the game, following his grandfather’s final request.
After impressing the selectors and earning a spot in Team India, Azhar quickly rises to national hero status by hitting three straight hundreds in his first three Test matches. Azhar soon weds Naureen, and the two start a blissful married life. The President of the Cricket Board summons Azhar one-on-one following a 1991 defeat to Pakistan.
When Azhar is offered the role of team captain, he is taken aback as he had first feared being cut from the squad. Certain more seasoned players, such as Manoj, Ravi, and Navjot, are upset that Azhar was named captain because they don’t want to follow orders from a less seasoned and younger player. However, Kapil encourages and helps him in concentrating on his task.
During a game between India and Pakistan, Javed makes fun of Azhar by informing him that since the Pakistani squad is Muslim and it’s Jumma (Friday, a Muslim holiday), Allah (god) is with them. Azhar retorted, bringing up his own Muslim background. Azhar quickly establishes himself as a successful captain after inspiring his side to victory. While filming an advertisement, Azhar meets popular Bollywood actress and former Miss India Sangeeta. He falls in love with her right away, and his personal life takes a turn at the height of his business.
Sangeeta also has feelings for him, but she cautions him against approaching her as she knows he is already married. However, Azhar ignores her advise since he is enamored with her attractiveness. When they first start dating, they don’t disclose their relationship to others until a gossip magazine outright exposes it.
Azhar is forced to come clean about his affair with Sangeeta. Naureen, devastated, requests for a divorce from him, and soon after, Azhar departs to wed Sangeeta. In order to reach his century slowly in a cricket match against the West Indies, Azhar gets into an argument with teammate Manoj, which causes the team to lose. In the following game, Azhar leads the team to victory and Manoj is benched.
Manoj promises to exact retribution after being humiliated. Later in his career, Azhar—known for leading an opulent lifestyle—comes under the scrutiny of match-fixers. Soon after, he receives an approach from M.K. Sharma, a bookmaker from London who poses as a diamond dealer. Sharma pays Azhar 10 million rupees to underplay in a match against Sri Lanka, which he reluctantly agrees.
In a related development, following the match-fixing controversy, Azhar is currently the target of much criticism. A prosecutor named Meera is working to establish a compelling case against him based on sting operations that Manoj conducted on cricket players Ravi, Navjot, and numerous others.
In order to obtain further information, she also consults the Cricket Board-established inquiry commission’s report and contacts M. K. Sharma, the bookmaker, in secret. Naureen is approached by Meera as well, but she declines to act as a witness. Since none of his fellow cricket players are willing to assist him, Azhar and his attorney Reddy are having difficulty locating any evidence of his innocence.
In an attempt to regain his former notoriety, Azhar goes to a gym opening ceremony, but the owner insults him. Reddy eventually achieves success in the eight-year legal battle by demonstrating in court that the inquiry committee report is skewed because it was funded by the Cricket Board.
Since none of the witnesses to the sting operation were sworn in, Reddy even questions the veracity of the videos themselves. Afterwards, Azhar also discloses that he gave the bookie 10 million rupees to keep him away from the other players on the team, but that he returned the entire sum to the bookie after hitting the game-winning innings.
Naureen and Sangeeta both turn up to the court hearing on the last day of the verdict, demonstrating their support for Azhar. In a TV interview, Kapil also expresses his conviction that Azhar is innocent. The court lifts Azhar’s ban from the India Cricket Board in its final ruling.
