Plot
The film’s plot is partially derived from BVS Rama Rao’s novel “Godavari Kathalu.” The movie is set in Bangarappeta village, which is close to Rajahmundry, in 1986. A newlywed couple named Malli (Aadhi) and Chitra (Lakshmi Manchu) must fight off a destructive flood of the River Godavari. When they find a place to rest, they give up all hope of surviving and decide to tell each other the stories of their worst experiences.
Malli tells Chitra his story first. Working under the cunning port official Sambasivayya is Malli, an honest fisherman. Malli works very hard to fulfill his dream of owning a fishing boat. His meeting with Sambasivayya’s daughter Sarala (Taapsee Pannu) causes some upheaval in his life because Sarala, who has lust for Malli, blackmails him into taking her to a movie; if he doesn’t, she will tell her father about their relationship.
After escorting her, Malli finally informs her that her presence is interfering with his life and ambition, and that he cannot continue. The police detain Malli that evening for growing ganja without a permit. After Malli’s job is terminated, his mother starts to doubt him. He learns that another fisherman named Chandra made the ganja.
Following Malli’s beating, Chandra admits that Sambasivayya gave him the order to do so because he thought Malli and Sarala were in love. When an enraged Malli visits Sambasivayya’s house to exact revenge, he discovers that he has left town. “You seem to have forgotten that you are a man after the beating you got from police due to my dad,” Sarala confronts an inebriated Malli as he is leaving, threatening to offend her modesty.
Thus, Malli only had passionate sex with Sarala that evening in order to vent her anger toward her father before finding out that Sarala would soon get married. Chitra begins sharing her story after listening to his with patience. When Chitra was four years old, a couple found her. After they brought her to their home, Chitra struck up a conversation with their son Suri.
Suri is misinformed when his mother begins an illicit relationship with the town doctor in an attempt to make money due to financial difficulties. As a result, Suri begins to despise both his father and his mother and grows closer to Chitra. Years later, Chitra works for the womanizing Dhorababu (Ravi Babu), while Suri (Sundeep Kishan), now a man, is a mason and has a strong love for cockfights.
Chitra and Suri’s mom visit the doctor’s office one day. Suri witnesses the doctor mistreating Chitra there and the women leaving the clinic. To her great distress, Chitra goes on the rampage with Bangari (Suja Varunee), a local, after Suri assumes that she is also romantically involved with the doctor. Chitra marries an elderly man in the interim, and Suri’s mother dies.
Suri tells Chitra what he witnessed at the doctor’s office in response to her plea for him to dissolve the marriage. Chitra’s honesty causes Suri to have a change of heart. That evening, Suri attacks Dhorababu when he tries to harass Chitra. When Suri makes a proposal to Chitra, his father attacks him. Suri makes an attempt to murder his father but is fatally wounded instead.
Even though Chitra and Suri arrive at the hospital, she discovers that the physician who had been lusting for her is employed there. The doctor goes to treat him, and she offers to stay with him for the night. After Chitra throws hot water at the doctor, Suri passes away from severe blood loss. Malli and Chitra thereby come to understand their love and desire to live together.
Unfortunately, though, the support fails. When Malli finds a bridge, she successfully stands on it. He rescues Chitra after spotting her drifting by. When they arrive at the top of the bridge, they are both overcome with happiness at being alive and together. They begin to cross the bridge by tossing the chain that Dhorababu gave them on their wedding day and the ring that Sarala gave them into the flood.
