Usha Uthup, born on November 8, 1947, into a Tamil Iyer family in Mumbai, emerged as a prominent Indian pop singer despite facing initial challenges due to her unconventional voice. During her schooling at St. Agnes High School in Byculla, she encountered resistance in music class because her voice didn’t conform to the norm. Despite this, her music teacher recognized her potential and encouraged her to participate by playing clappers or triangles, fostering her love for music.
Although she wasn’t formally trained, Usha grew up in a musical environment, where her parents exposed her to a diverse range of genres, from Western classical to Hindustani and Carnatic music. She often tuned in to Radio Ceylon and enjoyed listening to renowned artists like Kishori Amonkar and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Her interest in Hindi and Indian classical music was sparked by her neighbor, S.M.A. Pathan’s daughter, Jamila, which influenced Usha’s unique fusion style that defined her Indian pop music in the 1970s.
Married to Jani Chacko Uthup (from the Manarcaud Painumkal family of Kottayam), Usha was previously married to the late Ramu. They share a daughter named Anjali and a son named Sunny, named after the song “Sunny.” Presently residing in Kolkata, West Bengal, Usha Uthup remains a revered figure in the Indian music scene, celebrated for her distinctive voice and innovative approach to blending musical styles.
