Thambi Ramaiah, a versatile Indian figure in the Tamil film industry, is known as an actor, director, comedian, and occasional lyricist. He hails from Rarapuram village in Pudukkottai and initially aspired to be a screenwriter. Raised by a poet father and a homemaker mother, he earned money during school by penning love letters for peers and exhibited interests in lyric writing and musical instruments like the harmonium and guitar. Despite his dreams of entering the film world, he worked in a private company due to limited connections after moving to Chennai at 20.
His break came in 1994 when he worked as a dialogue writer, assistant director, scriptwriter, and lyricist for a Sun TV serial. He honed his skills under the mentorship of filmmakers like T. Rajender and P. Vasu. His directorial debut arrived in 2000 with “Manu Needhi,” followed by the Vadivelu-starrer “Indiralohathil Na Azhagappan” in 2008. Ramaiah gained prominence as an actor with his portrayal of an amicable policeman in Prabhu Solomon’s “Mynaa” (2010), which earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. His compelling performances continued in movies like “Saattai,” “Kumki” (2012), and “Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam” (2014). During his peak years in 2013–2014, he astonishingly worked in up to four films daily and spent around 25 days each month on various shooting locations, managing his own affairs from makeup to costumes.
In 2014, Ramaiah disclosed plans to introduce his son, Umapathy Ramaiah, as an actor. Umapathy later made his acting debut in the film “Adhagappattathu Magajanangalay” (2016), thereby continuing the family’s legacy in the film industry.
