Taz Skylar
Biography:
Tarek Yassin Skylar (born December 5, 1995), professionally known as Taz Skylar, is a British-Spanish actor and screenwriter. He gained recognition after the success of his self-written Off-West End play Warheads, and later went on to write and star in Gassed Up for Amazon Prime. He is also known for playing Sanji in Netflix’s One Piece (2023).
Skylar was born in Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands, to a Lebanese father and an English mother. His father was born in Sierra Leone, while his mother is from Yorkshire. Raised in Tenerife, he is fluent in Spanish and holds both British and Spanish citizenship, along with permanent residency in Spain.
After leaving high school at 15, he worked making surfboards. In 2016, he tried to join the British Army Reserve, but a car accident left him with a concussion, causing him to fail the medical requirements. During the waiting period before reapplying, he turned his focus to writing and acting.
He began his acting career in the UK with small roles, appearing in short films such as Venom and Beautiful (2015), followed by Trophy (2016). From 2018 to 2019, he portrayed Caps in The Reserves, a project he also wrote and produced.
Skylar co-wrote Warheads with Ross Berkeley Simpson, drawing inspiration from a close friend who experienced PTSD after serving as a Spanish infantryman. He also played the lead role of Miles in the production, which ran at Park Theatre and earned an Olivier Award nomination in 2020.
In 2018, he made his directorial debut with the short film Multi-Facial. The following year, he appeared in his first feature film, The Kill Team, as Sergeant Dawes. He also acted in Lie Low and the short film Final Gift in 2019. In 2020, he featured in Villain as Jason. By 2022, he had roles in Agatha Raisin as Harry Beam, The Deal as Gin, and an episode of The Lazarus Project as Walt.
In 2021, Skylar was cast as Sanji in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece. For the role, he underwent intensive martial arts training to perform many of his own stunts. The series debuted in 2023, released its second season in 2026, and has already been renewed for a third season currently in production.
