Siddharth Roy Kapur, born on August 2, 1974, is an Indian film producer and the founder of Roy Kapur Films. He previously served as the managing director of The Walt Disney Company India and was the president of the Producers Guild of India for six terms from 2016 to 2022. Kapur has been recognized in various prestigious lists, including Variety’s Top 500 Most Influential People in Global Entertainment from 2017 to 2023, The Economic Times Top 40 Indian Business Leaders Under 40, and The Hollywood Reporter Next Generation Asia Inaugural Class of Young Leaders. In 2023, he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Kapur is also involved in the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI) as a managing trustee and serves as the co-chairman of the CII Media and Entertainment Committee.
Born in Bombay (now Mumbai), Siddharth Roy Kapur is the eldest of three brothers. His mother, Salome Roy Kapur, is a former Miss India and a dance choreographer known for her expertise in Western and Indian dance forms. Kapur earned his bachelor’s degree in commerce from Sydenham College and a master’s degree in Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS).
Kapur started his career at Procter & Gamble in Mumbai before moving to Star TV in the strategic planning division. He then worked in various roles at Star TV, including a stint in Hong Kong as part of the News Corp Executive Development Program. Later, he joined UTV Motion Pictures in Mumbai as Senior Vice-President of Marketing & Communications. In 2008, he became the CEO of UTV Motion Pictures and eventually the managing director after UTV was integrated with The Walt Disney Company India.
In 2017, Siddharth Roy Kapur founded his production house, Roy Kapur Films (RKF). The company’s first feature film production, “The Sky Is Pink,” premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. RKF has produced successful films and series, including “Yeh Ballet,” “Aranyak,” and “Rocket Boys.” Their Gujarati film “Last Film Show (Chhello Show)” was India’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2023 Academy Awards and won the National Award 2023 for Best Gujarati Film.
RKF’s recent releases include the comedy-drama film “Tumse Na Ho Payega” and the war drama “Pippa,” available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video, respectively. Upcoming projects from Roy Kapur Films include the comedy film “Woh Ladki Hai Kahan?” and the official series adaptation of William Dalrymple’s book “The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company,” along with the action-thriller “DEVA” starring Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hegde, scheduled for release in 2024.
Siddharth Roy Kapur has been married twice. His first wife was Aarti Bajaj, whom he divorced before marrying television producer Kavita in 2011. He married actress Vidya Balan on December 14, 2012.
