Matka King

Story:

Matka King is a Hindi-language crime drama series produced for the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform. Written by Nagraj Manjule and Abhay Koranne, the series revolves around the life and career of a small cotton merchant who invents a new form of gambling known as “Matka,” creating a powerful betting underworld empire in late 1960s Mumbai.

The plot is focused on Brij Bhatti, portrayed by Vijay Varma, an ambitious man seeking respect in a rich and corrupt society and willing to do everything to achieve this goal. Brij invents a new type of lottery for ordinary people, but what starts as a petty activity soon becomes an extensive money-making scheme that involves criminal activities and betrayal. Gradually, Brij finds himself involved in dirty deals, which affect his relationships, morality, and mental condition negatively.

Sai Tamhankar, Kritika Kamra, Gulshan Grover, and Siddharth Jadhav deliver outstanding performances in supporting parts. Being at the intersection of genres like “gangster” and “social,” the crime series combines elements of suspense and psychological analysis of a protagonist’s actions and decisions. “Matka King” deals with such issues as ambition, social inequality, corruption, immorality, and the dangers of power.
