Saravanan is an Indian actor who has been part of various Tamil-language films. His journey in the film industry began with his debut in “Vaidhehi Vanthachu” (1991), where he played the leading role. Throughout the 1990s, he continued to portray lead characters in several films. Eventually, he transitioned into producing and directing his own movies. After a period of time away from acting, Saravanan made a comeback in the film “Paruthiveeran” (2007) in a supporting role. Since then, he has been actively involved in playing character roles in Tamil films. Notably, he was given the title “Ilaya Thalapathy” in 1993 for his role in the movie “Nallathe Nadakkum.”
Born into a Tamil family in Salem, Saravanan was the second of five children. His father worked as a police inspector, while his mother was a staff nurse. He pursued his education and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Tamil Literature from the Government Arts College in Salem.
Saravanan has been married twice. His first marriage was to Suryashree, a Telugu woman whom he had studied with at the Adyar Film Institute. During an episode of Bigg Boss Tamil 3, he revealed details about his second marriage and how his first wife accepted it, as they both desired to have a child.
As a child, Saravanan developed a keen interest in Tamil films and actively participated in various performance arts activities during his school days. He got the opportunity to visit the film set of director M. Sivachandran in Salem, which eventually led him to seek a chance to act in films. After moving to Chennai, he enrolled in the Adyar Film Institute for acting courses. It was there that he caught the attention of director Radha Bharathi, who gave him his break in the film “Vaidehi Vandhachu” (1991). Subsequently, he played leading roles in several films during the 1990s, but his career faced setbacks towards the end of the decade. In an attempt to revive his career, he produced two of his own films, “Vishwanath” (1996) and “Santosham” (1998).
Despite the success of “Santosham,” the financial losses incurred as a producer led him to take a break from acting and focus on clearing his debts through organizing concerts abroad. In 2001, he made a notable appearance in a negative role in Bala’s film “Nandha,” which earned him critical acclaim, but he did not take up further acting roles at the time. Additionally, he directed the film “Thayumanavan” (2003) as an effort to rejuvenate his career, but unfortunately, it went unnoticed.
