Krishna Kumar Menon, better known by his stage name Kay Kay Menon, was born on October 2, 1966. He is an Indian actor who primarily performs in Hindi films, with a small amount of work in Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, and Telugu. Menon grew up in Ambarnath and Pune, Maharashtra, India. He was born in Kozhikode, Kerala, into a family that spoke Malayalam. In Khadki, Pune, he attended St. Joseph High School.
In 1981, he finished the tenth grade. He completed his MBA from the University of Pune’s Department of Management Sciences (PUMBA) in 1988 with a major in marketing after completing his undergraduate studies in physical science at Mumbai University. Menon’s first focus was on working in the advertising sector, doing advertisements for Marlboro and Kinetic Honda in India.
He met Nivedita Bhattacharya during his early career in theatre productions, and they eventually got married. His first acting role was in Feroz Abbas Khan’s Mahatma vs. Gandhi, opposite Naseeruddin Shah. Menon began his career in television, having appeared in the series Zebra 2 and Last Train To Mahakali. He received recognition for his portrayal of a youthful prime minister in Ketan Mehta’s Zee TV series Pradhan Mantri (2001).
“An actor to watch: Kay Kay Menon… this unusually tall actor who plays the pradhan mantri is a major saving grace,” wrote Sevanti Ninan in The Hindu, while Amita Malik noted in The Tribune that Menon “excellent acting, who skillfully conveys the physical as well as mental image of the honest politician”. Menon’s big screen debut came in 1995 with a small role in Naseem. Then, in 1999, he played the lead in the mostly unnoticed film Bhopal Express.
This was the first of Menon’s film career’s initial setbacks. He played a sinister rock star in Anurag Kashyap’s first film, Paanch, which has not been released despite facing censorship in the early 2000s. Black Friday and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi were two other films that had to wait many years to be released. In the meantime, Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan’s commercial flicks Silsiilay and Deewar bombed at the box office.
Menon finally got his big break in 2005 with the release of the highly regarded Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, directed by Ram Gopal Varma. He was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role for Sarkar.[Reference required] Saibal Chatterjee referred to him as “one of Bollywood’s finest actors” in The Tribune.
He played an adulterous husband in the films Rahasya (2015), Enemmy (2013), and Life in a… Metro in 2007. He made an appearance in Shaurya, a 2008 film based on A Few Good Men. Among movie buffs, his portrayal of a merciless army brigadier is legendary. He played a police officer searching for the Stoneman serial killer in the 2009 film The Stoneman Murders.
He won Best Supporting Actor at both the Filmfare and IIFA awards in 2014 for his performance as Khurram Mir in the film Haider. As a Naval Captain based on an Indian Naval submarine, S21, he played a pivotal role in The Ghazi Attack in 1971 when he intercepted a Pakistani submarine, PNS Ghazi, during routine surveillance and prevented it from destroying the INS Vikrant.
He co-starred with Mohit Nain in the 2019 film Penalty as Vikram Singh. A part as Himmat Singh in 2020’s Special Ops, a web series for Hotstar, impressed and increased his popularity. He returned to the role of Himmat Singh, the R&AW leading officer, in Special Ops 1.5, the Special Ops prequel, in 2021. OTT viewers thought he did a great job in this series.
Hotstar Specials, in collaboration with Friday Storytellers and filmmaker Neeraj Pandey, is set to introduce a new storytelling format called “Special Ops Universe” in response to the overwhelming success of their espionage thriller Special Ops.
