Biography:

Daggubati Venkatesh, also known by the screen names Raja and Daggubati Raja, is an Indian actor who transitioned into the business world. His acting career spans across Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu language films. He initially made his debut in the Tamil film industry with “Paakku Vethalai” in 1981. From 1986 to 2000, he established himself as a leading actor in Tamil cinema. Venkatesh also played secondary and supporting roles in movies like “Sathi Leelavathi” alongside Kamal Haasan and “Mappillai” with Rajinikanth. He ventured into Telugu cinema with films such as “Chinnari Sneham,” “Sankellu,” and “Shri Krishnarjuna Vijayam.”

As a relative of the veteran film producer late D. Ramanaidu, Venkatesh was encouraged by his family to pursue an acting career in Tamil cinema due to his familiarity with Madras (now Chennai). He received formal acting training at Bharathiraja’s acting school. His breakthrough came with the romantic drama “Kadalora Kavithaigal” in 1986, and he adopted the screen name “Raja” to distinguish himself from his cousin. While he gained a significant fan base after the success of “Kadalora Kavithaigal” and “Vedham Pudhithu,” he mainly played supporting roles and was known for his soft, demure character portrayals, often as a gentle romantic who didn’t win the lead actress’s heart. Despite his popularity, he felt disheartened by the limited scope of roles offered to him and chose to shift his focus to the business world, particularly in the granite industry with “Cosmo Granites” in Chennai.

In 2019, after a hiatus of nearly two decades from acting, Venkatesh, using his real name, made a comeback in the film “N.T.R: Kathanayakudu,” where he portrayed the supporting character of Trivikrama Rao. He also returned to Tamil cinema with a role in “Adithya Varma” the same year, playing the father of the titular character. This marked a notable resurgence in his acting career after his venture into the business sector.
