Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi, often referred to as M.S. Subbulakshmi, was an extraordinary Carnatic singer born on September 16, 1916, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. From a young age, she delved into the world of music, receiving training in Carnatic and Hindustani music from eminent gurus like Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas, respectively.
Subbulakshmi’s journey into music began with her initial performances, notably her debut at the Madras Music Academy at the age of 13 in 1929. Her renditions of bhajans showcased her prodigious talent and marked the commencement of a remarkable career.
In 1936, she made a significant move to Madras (Chennai) where she not only continued her musical pursuits but also ventured into the world of cinema, making her film debut in ‘Sevasadan’ in 1938. Her musical prowess and versatile voice made her a renowned figure in both classical music and the film industry.
