Reynor was born in Longmont, Colorado, to an Irish mother and an American father. He has a younger brother and sister. He initially lived in Boulder, Colorado, with his mother, human rights activist Tara Reynor O’Grady, before moving with her to Valleymount, County Wicklow, when he was two. Reynor attended primary school in Valleymount and spent much of his childhood there with his mother and maternal grandparents, Damien and Pat Reynor. His interest in acting started when he played an altar boy in the 1999 film Country. In 2004, he moved to Dublin to attend Belvedere College, a private Jesuit school, where he performed in numerous school theater productions.
In early 2010, Reynor was cast in Dollhouse, an unscripted live-format film directed by Kirsten Sheridan, which premiered at the 2012 Berlinale. He portrayed Richard Karlsen in What Richard Did, a role that earned him the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) award for Best Actor in 2013. The film, which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, follows the fall of a high school rugby star whose life unravels after a violent incident.
In 2013, Reynor was cast as Shane, an Irish race car driver, in Transformers: Age of Extinction, which was released in 2014 and co-starred Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz. The film became a worldwide box office hit, grossing over $1.1 billion.
Following his work on Transformers, Reynor filmed Mowgli for Netflix, directed by Andy Serkis, alongside Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Benedict Cumberbatch. The film was released in 2018, though it was shot in 2015. He also starred in Glassland (2015), directed by Gerard Barrett, playing a young taxi driver dealing with his mother’s alcoholism. His performance earned him the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival.
In 2015, Reynor appeared in A Royal Night Out, a romantic comedy directed by Julian Jarrold, and portrayed Malcolm Canmore in a film adaptation of Macbeth, which premiered in Edinburgh. He also starred in Sing Street (2016), playing Brendan in this 1980s Dublin-set coming-of-age musical that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
