In 1974, Bharathiraja married ChandraLeela, and they had two children, Manoj and Janani. Manoj is an actor who made his debut in the film Tajmahal, and he is married to actress Nandana. Janani is married to Malaysian Rajkumar Thambiraja.

Bharathiraja’s brother-in-law, Manoj Kumar, is also a filmmaker. He has directed films such as Mannukkul Vairam, Vandicholai Chinraasu, Vaanavill, and Guru Paarvai. Bharathiraja’s brother, Jayaraj, is an actor who made his debut in the film Kaththukkutti.
