Ashok Saraf, born on June 4, 1947, is an acclaimed Indian actor and comedian known for his versatile performances in Marathi and Hindi cinema, as well as in theatre productions in both languages. With a career spanning over five decades, Saraf has garnered widespread recognition and numerous accolades, including four Filmfare Marathi Awards. Often referred to as the Mahanayak (Greatest Actor), Ashok Samrat, or Mama of the Marathi film industry, he is celebrated for his immense contributions to Indian cinema.
Saraf’s journey in the entertainment industry began in the early 1980s when he started receiving leading roles in Marathi films. Alongside stalwarts like Laxmikant Berde, Sachin Pilgaonkar, and Mahesh Kothare, Saraf played a pivotal role in ushering in the “comedy films wave” in Marathi cinema from 1985, which endured for more than a decade. His noteworthy performances in Marathi films such as “Ek Daav Bhutacha” (1982), “Dhum Dhadaka” (1985), “Gammat Jammat” (1987), and “Aayatya Gharat Gharoba” (1991) established him as a prominent figure in the industry.
In addition to his stellar contributions to Marathi cinema, Saraf has also made a mark in Bollywood, featuring in notable films like “Karan Arjun” (1995), “Yes Boss” (1997), and “Joru Ka Ghulam” (2000), among others. He also ventured into television with appearances in Hindi sitcoms, including “Don’t Worry Ho Jayega.”
Born and raised in Bombay (now Mumbai), Saraf attended DGT Vidyalay for his education. He grew up in the Chikhalwadi neighborhood of South Mumbai, where he spent his formative years. Inspired by veteran actor Ashok Kumar, Saraf embarked on his acting journey, making his debut in the Marathi movie “Janaki” in 1969.
