Selvaraj An Indian film director, screenwriter, actor, composer, producer, and music director by the name of S. J. Suryah, Justin Pandian has primarily worked in the Tamil cinema business. He wanted to be an actor, but he began directing while working with Vasanth and Sabapathy.
In 1999, Surya made his directorial debut with the film Vaali, whose popularity propelled him to fame. Kushi (2000), New (2004), Anbe Aaruyire (2005), and Isai (2015) are a few of his other well-known movies. He made his acting debut in the movie New and went on to star in Kalvanin Kadhali (2006), Thirumagan (2007), and Vyabari (2007). He also played the antagonist in God Father-True Story of a Man (2016), as well as the protagonist in Kadamaiyai Sei (2022) and the villain in Spyder (2017) and Mersal (2017).
After finishing high school in Vasudevanallur, a small town in South Tamil Nadu not far from Sankarankovil, Suryah relocated to Chennai to attend Loyola College and earn a degree in physics. He was given the chance to continue his education at a Madurai engineering college, but he turned it down in favor of staying in Chennai and trying to break into the Tamil film industry. He started working in hotels and as a steward to become self-sufficient before being offered an apprenticeship with K. Bhagyaraj.Later, he served as an assistant director on the production teams of Aasai (1995) directed by Vasanth and Sundara Purushan (1996) directed by Sabapathy. He also made uncredited acting appearances, most notably as a cock fighter in Bharathiraja’s Kizhakku Cheemayile (1993).
Ajith Kumar, the principal actor in Ullaasam (1997), recognized Suryah from their previous work together on Aasai and agreed to listen to a script narration. After being struck by the narrative, Ajith assisted in approaching S. S. Chakravarthy to produce the movie, and the team started production on Vaali (1999) in late 1997. Prior to Simran taking over as the lead actress, Keerthi Reddy was slated to play the role. Suryah also decided to cast Jyothika as a supporting player. According to a Deccan Herald reviewer, the movie “definitely worth seeing” and “has something for all tastes — a pleasant love angle, some suspense, complex psychological nuances, good acting, pleasing songs” while applauding Ajith’s performance.
The critic from Indolink.com praised Suryah as “a new young director to the cine field who can make Tamil Cinema be proud once again,” calling the movie “a classic in its own right.” The New Indian Express praised the movie as being “outstanding” and said that Surya succeeds. Due to the movie’s commercial success, both Suryah and the principal actors’ careers saw a breakthrough.
Producer A. M. Rathnam offered Suryah the chance to make another movie after seeing the Vaali premiere; as a result, Kushi, a romantic comedy starring Vijay and Jyothika, came to be. The film, which tells the tale of two egotistical lovers with a collegiate setting, was shot in South India and New Zealand in the early years of 2000. The movie premiered in May 2000 to rave reviews from critics and went on to be a box office hit. Rediff.com and Bizhat.com both gave the film excellent reviews, describing it as a “neat family entertainer” and applauding the director’s storytelling.
His movie Nenjam Marappathillai, which was directed by Selvaraghavan, was released in 2021. S. J. Suryah gives a lethal performance as the lecherous businessman, utterly taking the spotlight. Ramsay is undoubtedly one of S. J. Suryah’s most brilliant and amusing characters. The following project for Suryah was the Silambarasan and Kalyani Priyadarshan-led Maanaadu (2021) film, which was directed by Venkat Prabhu. For the third time, he portrayed a hostile police officer who was corrupt. The reviews for this movie were overwhelmingly positive, and Suryah’s acting was appreciated. He played an antagonist for the fourth time in Don, a film starring Sivakarthikeyan. His most recent appearance was as a protagonist in Kadamaiyai Sei, which drew mixed reviews from critics and audience members.
