Richa Gangopadhyay was born in New Delhi on March 20, 1986. When she was three years old, her family relocated to the country. Her mother, who has been appointed by President Obama to serve as a member of the IMLS Board, works as the deputy director of the prestigious Institute of Museums and Library Services, while her father serves as vice president of Netscape Technologies. After spending her first year in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, her parents moved to the United States in 1989, and Gangopadhyay grew up in Pennsylvania and Michigan.
She was highlighted in the local media as a junior at Okemos High School for developing and running a Lansing youth tutoring programme for at-risk kids for four years. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in communications with a minor in theatre arts before going on to Michigan State University to major in dietetics and health administration. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a master’s in business administration after finishing her undergraduate studies.
The action movie Mirapakaay, in which she debuted alongside Ravi Teja, was her first release of 2011. She was signed after the movie’s director, Harish Shankar, caught her at the premiere of her prior film, Leader. When they met to go over the script, he was persuaded that Gangopadhyay would do justice to the role of Vinamra, a typical Telugu Brahmin girl. He had originally offered her the role performed by Deeksha because she was an NRI.
The movie received positive reviews upon its release, with critics praising Gangopadhyay’s performance as “good and just about hold her own in the dance sequences.” Next, Gangopadhyay appeared in two Tamil films, the first of which, Selvaraghavan’s drama Mayakkam Enna, which starred Dhanush, received overwhelmingly positive reviews and widespread acclaim. After that, she co-starred with Silambarasan in Dharani’s Osthe, the Tamil version of the 2010 Hindi film Dabangg, where she was praised for her portrayal as Neduvaali.
She made her debut in Bengali, her native language, in the 2012 remake of the Telugu film Vikramarkudu, Bikram Singha: The Lion Is Back, in which she starred opposite the well-known Prosenjit Chatterjee. Alongside Ravi Teja, Prabhas, and Nagarjuna, she also starred in the 2012 and 2013 Telugu films Sarocharu, Mirchi, and Bhai.
