Farida Jalal

Actress
Birth Place : Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Spouse : Tabrez Barmavar

Biography:

Farida Jalal, born on May 18, 1950, in Bombay, began her acting career in the 1960s after winning the United Film Producers Talent Hunt, organized by Filmfare in 1965. Along with Rajesh Khanna, she was selected as a finalist, and both were introduced as winners at the Filmfare Awards ceremony. Tarachand Barjatya, who was present in the audience, offered her first role in the film Taqdeer. In a 2014 interview, Jalal recalled, “I had just finished school at St. Joseph’s Convent in Panchgani when I began acting with Taqdeer. After winning a talent competition — where Rajesh Khanna and I were finalists — I had no idea I would soon be acting alongside him in Aradhana.”

Early in her career, Jalal often portrayed the sister or the spurned fiancée of the hero. In an interview, she explained how this typecasting began: “It started with Gopi, where I played the sister of the legendary Dilip Kumar. I eagerly accepted the offer — just being on set with him would have been enough. At that time, actors like Dharmendra, Jeetendra, and Manoj Kumar were all emulating Dilip Saab. Being cast as his sister made me very sought-after, and soon every hero wanted me as his sister in their films. Often, the sister had a more substantial role than the official heroine, who mainly had songs to perform, while I had intense dramatic scenes. I received recognition and awards for these performances. For instance, in Paras, although Raakhee-di played the heroine, my role as Sanjeev Kumar’s sister had more depth, and I won my first award. My second came for Majboor, written by Salim-Javed, where Amitabh Bachchan played my brother. Why would I aspire to be a heroine when I was already getting the stronger roles as the sister?”

Throughout the 1990s, Jalal appeared in many blockbuster films, including Raja Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the last earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996. She also played the lead role in Mammo, a film that won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, while she earned the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Jalal expanded into television as well, notably appearing in the sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh.

In 2003, she took on a major role in the series Shararat. Two years later, in 2005, she co-hosted the 50th Filmfare Awards in Mumbai alongside Saif Ali Khan and Sonali Bendre. In 2008, she made a special appearance in the Punjabi film Yaariyan and later featured in the popular TV soap Balika Vadhu.

Farida Jalal married actor Tabrez Barmavar from Bhatkal, Karnataka, whom she met during the filming of Jeevan Rekha. Their relationship blossomed on set, leading to their marriage in November 1978. After marrying, they moved to Bangalore where Barmavar ran a soap manufacturing business. They have a son named Yaseen. Sadly, Tabrez passed away in September 2003.

In 2017, false rumors circulated online claiming that Jalal had passed away, but these reports were quickly debunked.
