The Green Mile

Story:

The Green Mile is an American fantasy drama movie from 1999 directed and written by Frank Darabont. This film is an adaptation of the novel of the same title, created by Stephen King in serial form. It takes place in 1935 at the Louisiana State Penitentiary known as Cold Mountain Penitentiary, where the protagonist of the story, Paul Edgecomb (played by Tom Hanks), who is a prison officer serving on the death row called the “Green Mile,” works. After being assigned there, he discovers some shocking and unusual things, like the presence of a giant African-American named John Coffey, who was sentenced for raping and murdering two little girls. Though having such a terrifying face, he shows himself to be kind and gentle and possesses some supernatural abilities that make the guards rethink their perception of guilt, justice, and morals.

The movie deals with the themes of compassion, injustice, punishment, faith, and miracle, as Paul and his colleagues slowly start realizing that John Coffey is not a monster that they expected him to be. In addition to the Coffey’s character, the movie portrays many other people, both good and bad- a ruthless guard called Percy Wetmore, a humane prison officer Brutus Howell, and several prisoners as well. The Green Mile was nominated for four Academy Awards, including the best movie nomination, the best supporting actor nomination for Michael Clarke Duncan, the best adapted screenplay nomination, and the best sound nomination.
