Box Office India labeled the film a superhit both domestically and internationally, with total worldwide earnings reaching ₹161.48 crore (US$19 million).
Plot
A fierce feud rages between the Sandhu and Randhawa families. During a violent clash, Jaswinder “Jassi” Singh Randhawa’s father and Balwinder “Billu” Singh Sandhu’s uncle kill each other on the night of Billu’s wedding to Parmeet “Pammi” Kaur. Shattered by the tragedy, Billu swears not to marry until he avenges his uncle’s death by killing Randhawa’s son. Jassi’s mother escapes the village with her young son, eventually settling in London.
Twenty-five years later, Jassi is a struggling immigrant in London and best friends with Pathan, a club owner. When he learns that he has inherited land in Phagwara, Punjab, Jassi decides to return to India. Although Pathan warns him about the long-standing feud, Jassi dismisses it, assuming the rivalry is long buried. However, in Phagwara, Billu and his brothers, Tito and Tony, are still actively searching for Randhawa’s heir. Pammi, meanwhile, continues to wait for her delayed marriage to Billu.
During his journey from New Delhi to Phagwara, Jassi meets and falls for Sukhmeet “Sukh” Kaur Sandhu, unaware that she is Billu’s younger sister. Once in Phagwara, he is picked up by Tony, who soon uncovers Jassi’s identity and attempts to kill him but fails. Jassi later meets Billu at a temple, and unaware of the danger, ends up accepting his invitation to the Sandhu household, where Sukh recognizes him. When Tony confirms Jassi’s identity to Billu, the latter vows to kill him—just not while he’s a guest in the house, due to a sacred family tradition that forbids violence against guests.
Realizing the danger he’s in, Jassi pretends to have a serious back injury to extend his stay as a guest, buying himself time. Billu, enraged, repeatedly plots to eliminate him. Meanwhile, Sukh’s friend, Dr. Tej “Bobby” Jaswal, discovers Jassi’s deception but keeps the secret between them. Jassi later seeks help from a local police officer, only to be betrayed and led into an ambush by Billu and his men. Jassi narrowly escapes and ends up back at the Sandhu residence.
As Lohri festivities approach, Billu suddenly announces the engagement of Sukh and Bobby, shocking both of them. However, Pammi secretly reveals to Sukh and Bobby that the engagement is a ruse to help Jassi escape unnoticed. Learning that Sukh loves him, Jassi chooses not to flee, instead determined to confront and end the longstanding feud.
On the day of the engagement, Sukh runs away with Jassi’s support. Though she wants to elope, Jassi insists on resolving the conflict. After a fierce showdown, Billu’s mother intervenes, urging peace. Moved, Billu lets go of his vengeance, agrees to Jassi and Sukh’s marriage, and finally decides to marry Pammi, bringing closure and unity to both families.
