TheatreOohalu Gusagusalade (transl. Imaginations whispered) is a 2014 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy movie written and directed by Srinivas Avasarala in his debut as a director. Produced by Sai Korrapati and Rajani Korrapati for Vaaraahi Chalana Chitram, the film stars Naga Shaurya, Raashi Khanna (in her Telugu film debut), and Avasarala. Based on Edmond Rostand’s 1897 French play Cyrano de Bergerac, the story revolves around a young girl named Prabhavati (played by Khanna) and two men, Venky (played by Shaurya) and Uday (played by Avasarala), who are both in love with her.
Plot
N. Venkateswara “Venky” Rao is employed at UB TV and aspires to follow in his father N. Bhanu Murthy’s footsteps as a news reader. Bhanu Murthy retired from his job as a news reader at Doordarshan due to the emergence of new channels and a stroke. Venky, however, faces challenges in pursuing his goal, with Vamana Rao posing a strong competition. Despite his aspirations, Venky has been working as an anchor for Teleshopping ads at UB TV for the past four years. His boss, Uday Bhaskar, envies Venky’s ease in communicating with women, unlike himself, and becomes an obstacle in Venky’s path to becoming a news reader. Uday, after rejecting numerous marriage proposals, agrees to marry a dentist named Sirisha upon seeing her photo provided by his matchmaker. After their initial meeting, Sirisha wishes to meet Uday again to get to know him better. Due to Uday’s lack of communication skills with women, he seeks Venky’s advice.
Venky recounts his own love story, where he met a girl named Prabhavathi, also known as Prabha, during a vacation in Visakhapatnam. Despite developing strong feelings for her, Prabha only sees Venky as a friend and declines his proposal, citing her young age and desire to maintain their friendship. This rejection deeply affects Venky, and Prabha eventually returns to Delhi. Meanwhile, Uday’s attempts to impress Sirisha fail, leading him to devise a plan with his matchmaker to portray Venky as an unsuitable match and himself as a better option. Threatened with job loss and promised a news reader position if he complies, Venky reluctantly agrees to participate in the scheme.
However, when Venky meets Sirisha, he discovers that she is Prabha. Shocked and wanting to avoid an awkward situation, Venky enlists the help of a friend named Chinta Guru Murthy to pose as a prospective groom. The plan backfires when Prabha realizes the truth and expresses her feelings for Venky, having grown fond of him over the years. Uday continues to pursue Sirisha, using Venky’s assistance to communicate with her effectively. In a turn of events, Uday proposes to Prabha without Venky’s help, but she rejects him and asks him to leave.
Venky’s mother advises him to resign from his job and win back Prabha. When Venky resigns and is about to meet Prabha, Uday attacks him and prevents him from leaving. Despite Uday’s interference, Venky’s actions inadvertently lead to a fire in Uday’s office, drawing attention to his plight. Venky seizes the opportunity to confess his love for Prabha on live television and reveals Uday’s deceit. With help from Guru, Prabha arrives at UB TV and reconciles with Venky. Uday’s father intervenes and stops him from taking any further action against Venky.
As a result of these events, UB TV’s ratings surpass those of TV9, and Venky becomes a popular figure. Uday appoints Venky as the news reader for the evening bulletin and assigns Vamana Rao to Teleshopping. The movie concludes with Venky assisting Uday in using Bluetooth to flirt with a girl.
