Story:

Okkadu Migiladu is a 2017 Indian Telugu war drama film directed by Ajay Andrews Nuthakki. The film stars Manchu Manoj, Anisha Ambrose, and Nuthakki. It is an official remake of the Tamil film Ravana Desam (2010). The film is based on the true story of the Sri Lankan Civil War and the plight of Tamil refugees.

Okkadu Migiladu a thinly veiled remake of the Tamil film “Ravana Desam,” leans heavily on recycled visuals, raising questions about remake practices. Unlike typical remakes, the entire second half, encompassing the boat journey and action sequences, is a direct copy from the original, with only the protagonist changed. This dark thriller features gritty interrogation scenes in the first half and a grueling second half that pulls no punches.

While the initial act unfolds conventionally, Surya’s narration about his village caught between the LTTE and the government offers a brief flicker of intrigue. Unfortunately, the director fails to build upon this potential, leaving the story adrift after this point. The second half, while aiming to evoke sympathy for the suffering refugees, drowns in sentimentality and ultimately loses its grip on the audience.

Although the film shines a light on the refugees’ plight, its graphic nature and lack of commercial elements make it a challenging viewing experience. While V.K. Ramraj’s cinematography deserves praise, particularly for the impressive handling of the boat sequences, “Okkadu Migiladu” ultimately fails to deliver on its promise due to its reliance on borrowed material, weak narrative development, and graphic execution.
