TheatreIn his first directing role, Alphonse Puthren wrote, directed, and edited the 2013 Indian black comedy thriller Neram. It is produced concurrently in Tamil and Malayalam. It is an extended version of the short film of the same name, which he directed in 2009. It stars Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim (in their Kollywood debuts) and Bobby Simha in both versions. In the Malayalam version, Manoj K. Jayan, Shammi Thilakan, Lalu Alex, and Willson Joseph played supporting roles; in the Tamil version, the characters were portrayed by Nassar, Thambi Ramiah, John Vijay, and Shabareesh Varma.
The entire movie takes place in Chennai in a single day. The movie’s production started in the middle of 2012 and ended in March 2013. Anend C. Chendran handled the cinematography, and Rajesh Murugesan, a debutante, composed the soundtrack. A week later, on May 17, 2013, the Tamil version was released, following the Malayalam version on May 10.
Both of Neram’s versions were well-reviewed when they were released and did well at the box office. Sundeep Kishan starred in the Telugu version of the movie, Run (2016), while Vijay Raghavendra starred in the Kannada version, Kismath (2018). This film is about to be remade in Hindi
Mathew/Vetri, a graduate of computer engineering, lost his job, and his life is now complicated because he has borrowed money from a private moneylender named Vatti Raja and cannot pay back the loan because he has no income. Jeena/Veni’s father, Johnykutty/Saravanar, forbids her marriage to Mathew/Vetri because he is unemployed. Jeena/Veni decides to elope with Mathew/Vetri, and his friend John gives him money to pay off his debt to Raja. While they are traveling, Jeena/Veni’s chain is stolen, and Mathew/Vetri’s money is taken. Raja calls Mathew/Vetri and requests that he settle the money by 5 PM.
Johnykutty/Saravanar files a complaint against Mathew/Vetri with SI Ukken Tintu/Katta Kunju, claiming that he kidnapped Jeena/Veni and provides his number. Tintu/Kunju calls Mathew/Vetri and instructs him to accompany Jeena/Veni to the police station by 5 PM, but there are still issues ahead: Mathew/Vetri’s brother-in-law demands a certain amount of money from him in order to launch a business, and even that is set for 5 PM. Meanwhile, Raja’s men kidna/Veni, believing her to be another man’s girlfriend, who must also return money to Raja as well.
When Mathew/Vetri sees the same man, he intends to grab his chain, but the man has an accident while attempting to do so, so Mathew/Vetri brings him to the hospital. RayBan/Dhandapani, the man’s powerful brother, guarantees Mathew/Vetri a position in his business. Tintu/Kunju shows up out of the blue and informs them that Raja passed away in an accident. It turns out that Lighthouse, the thief of Mathew/Vetri’s money and Jeena/Veni’s chain, had also taken out a loan from Raja. Lighthouse planned with two others in having the money for themselves and stole Raja’s car.
Although the plan went smoothly, Raja’s men followed the car, and Raja followed the other man. During the chase, Raja was killed by an automobile, and it just so happens that the driver of the automobile was the one who hit RayBan/Dhandapani’s brother Manick with his car as well. Later, Mathew/Vetri confronts the men who stole his money and fights with them, finding his money and a chain inside the car, as well as Jeena/Veni in the back (Ra had hidden her in his car). Mathew/Vetri gives the money to his brother-in-law, and the film concludes with the optimistic statement, “Time is of two types: good time and bad time. Good will come after every bad time in life.”
