Story:

A. J. Murugan made his directorial debut with Manmadhan, also known as Maanmathaun[2], an Indian Tamil-language romantic crime thriller released in 2004. For the first time in his career, Silambarasan plays two roles: a supporting role for Sindhu Tolani, Goundamani, Atul Kulkarni, and Jyothika as the female protagonist. Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the soundtrack.

Manmadhan had its theatrical debut on November 12, 2004, which was Diwali. When it was first released, it was well received and enjoyed a blockbuster run at the box office for more than 150 days. In Kannada, it was recreated as Madana (2006).

Plot

The movie “Manmadhan” begins by introducing the protagonist, Madhan Kumar (played by Silambarasan), a charming and affluent young man who leads a double life. By day, he is an ordinary college student, but by night, he transforms into a mysterious serial killer targeting women with dubious morals. The film opens with a series of murders, setting a dark and suspenseful tone as the police struggle to find clues about the elusive killer.

During the day, Madhan is depicted as a popular student at his college. He is well-liked by his peers, especially by his close friend, Seenu (played by Santhanam). Madhan’s affable and friendly demeanor at college is a stark contrast to his sinister activities at night. He is also a talented musician, often seen playing the guitar and participating in college events, which adds to his charm and popularity among his friends.

As the narrative progresses, the audience learns more about the murders Madhan commits. His targets are women who engage in morally questionable activities, and he meticulously plans and executes each murder without leaving any evidence behind. The police, led by Inspector Deva (played by Atul Kulkarni), are baffled by the killings and launch an intense investigation to catch the serial killer. However, they remain clueless about Madhan’s involvement.

The plot takes a significant turn with the entry of Vaishnavi (played by Jyothika), a new student who joins Madhan’s college. Vaishnavi is a bold and straightforward girl who quickly becomes friends with Madhan. She is unaware of his dark side and is drawn to his charismatic personality. Vaishnavi’s presence in Madhan’s life brings a new dimension to the story, as she begins to develop feelings for him.

Flashbacks reveal Madhan’s troubled past, shedding light on his transformation into a serial killer. It is shown that Madhan had a twin brother, Madhan Raj (also played by Silambarasan), who was deeply in love with a girl named Vaishnavi. However, Madhan Raj’s love story ended tragically when Vaishnavi betrayed him and left him heartbroken. Unable to cope with the betrayal, Madhan Raj committed suicide, leaving Madhan Kumar devastated and vengeful.

Madhan Kumar’s encounters with Vaishnavi remind him of his late brother’s tragic love story. Although he initially harbors resentment towards her, he gradually starts to care for her, seeing a different side of her personality. Vaishnavi’s genuine affection and kindness towards Madhan make him question his violent actions and the path he has chosen. This internal conflict adds depth to his character and drives the narrative forward.

Inspector Deva intensifies his investigation, determined to catch the serial killer. He starts connecting the dots and becomes suspicious of Madhan. The tension rises as Deva gets closer to uncovering Madhan’s dual identity. The cat-and-mouse game between Madhan and Deva adds to the suspense, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. Deva’s relentless pursuit brings him face-to-face with Madhan, leading to a dramatic confrontation.

In a dramatic twist, Madhan confesses his crimes to Vaishnavi. Shocked and heartbroken, Vaishnavi confronts Madhan about his actions and the reasons behind them. Madhan explains his traumatic past and the emotional scars left by his brother’s death. He reveals that his killing spree was a misguided attempt to avenge his brother and prevent other women from causing similar pain. This emotional revelation showcases Madhan’s vulnerability and the complexity of his character.

The climax of the movie is intense and action-packed. Inspector Deva finally gathers enough evidence to arrest Madhan. In a desperate attempt to escape, Madhan engages in a high-stakes chase, but ultimately, he is cornered by the police. In a poignant moment, Madhan expresses regret for his actions and accepts his fate. Vaishnavi, despite her feelings for him, supports the police, understanding that justice must be served. Madhan’s arrest brings an end to the series of murders, providing closure to the victims’ families.

Manmadha concludes on a reflective note, with Madhan in prison, paying for his crimes. Vaishnavi, though heartbroken, moves on with her life, cherishing the memories of the person she once loved. The film ends with a message about the consequences of vengeance and the importance of forgiveness. Madhan’s story serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the destructive power of hatred and the need for emotional healing.
