Subramaniyan Karuppaiya, the iconic Goundamani, is an Indian actor and comedian who, together with fellow actor Senthil, redefined Tamil comedy in the 1980s and 90s. Born on May 25, 1939, in the quaint village of Vallakundapuram near Udumalaipettai, Tamil Nadu, India, Subramaniyan, better known as Goundamani, began his journey. Son of Karuppaiya and Annammal, he found love and family in 1963, marrying Shanthi and becoming the proud father of two daughters.

Goundamani’s real name is Subramaniyan Karuppaiya. He has been a comedian in Tamil cinema for nearly 40 years. He is known for his comic duo partnership with Senthil. He is popularly known as the king of comedy in Tamil cinema. He is a social recluse. He has the ability to give counter dialogues on the spot. His stage name is unrelated to his ability to give counter dialogues.

Passionate about acting, Goundamani honed his skills in Chennai’s theatre scene before entering Kollywood. His film debut came in “Server Sundaram” as an uncredited driver, followed by his official entry in 1977’s “16 Vayathinile” as a sidekick to Rajinikanth. While primarily a supporting comedic actor, Goundamani also played lead roles. His collaboration with Senthil, a comedic duo dubbed “Tamil cinema’s Laurel and Hardy,” brought slapstick humor to Tamil films for decades, solidifying their place as an iconic pair.

Goundamani and Senthil’s 100th film “Karakattakkaran” (1989) cemented their iconic duo status. Their dedication (28 filming days) and memorable scene with “Adhu enda enna pathu?” became internet memes.
