TheatreNaseef Yusuf Izuddin’s first directorial effort, Irul, is a 2021 Indian Malayalam-language mystery horror film, co-produced by Anto Joseph Film Company and Plan J Studios, and starring Fahadh Faasil, Soubin Shahir, and Darshana Rajendran. It was made available on Netflix on April 2, 2021. Writer and businessman Alex Parayil and his girlfriend Archana Pillai decide to spend the weekend away from cell phones, and Alex promises Archana a surprise. The couple tries to seek refuge at a nearby house after their automobile breaks down in the rain as they are travelling. They are taken in by the home’s owner, who allows them to spend the night there after informing them that the phone line is down due to the storm. The three strikes up a conversation during which the eccentric house owner attacks Alex’s book, “Irul,” which is based on a real-life serial murderer who brutally murdered five people, as being wildly inventive and erroneous rather than grounded in factual facts and knowledge.
The house’s power supply cuts off in the middle of the chat, so Alex and the owner try to find the main electrical switch in the basement. When Archana hears a gunshot, she finds Alex tying up the unconscious house owner and carrying him back to the living room. Alex accuses the man of being the serial killer that inspired Alex’s novel. When the owner awakens, he disputes this, claiming that he is a burglar who broke in and cut off the phone line. However, Alex forbids Archana from calling the police, indicating that the house belongs to him.
Alex goes on to explain that he had intended to take Archana there and pop the question, but he was taken aback to discover a stranger in his home. Nevertheless, he chose to comply out of curiosity. As Alex and Unni accuse one another of being responsible for the murders, they each give conflicting accounts of what transpired in the basement, claiming that the corpse of a girl who was killed in the same way as the serial killings was found there. When Unni discloses that he discovered several rings in the house instead of the single ring that Alex displayed, a rifle that belonged to Alex, and the fact that Alex purchased a mobile when he forbade Archana from doing so, Archana starts to doubt Alex’s innocence.
After a while, the three land in the basement to examine the body, where Archana tries to shoot Alex and Alex starts attacking Unni. Archana determines that Alex is the murderer and shoots him in the stomach after Alex chooses to kill and bury Unni after he provokes him. Unni sneaks up behind Archana and forces her to pull the trigger as Alex starts to deteriorate from the wound and begs her to leave the house, exposing himself as the murderer. The killer is still at large, according to the news broadcast the next day, which also includes the finding of the three bodies of Alex, Archana, and the girl known as Vani Balan.
