Budugu wasn’t just a fictional character, it was the childhood nickname of Mullapudi Venkata Ramana, the creator of this endearing comic strip. His sister, affectionately called “Budigi,” also played a part in his stories.
Ramana described the world through Budugu’s eyes, filled with humor and childlike wonder. This precocious little boy had opinions on everything, from culture and parenting to politics and the intriguing concept of the “13th table.” His biggest dreams? To become a horse cart driver (tange-wala) or a train driver, symbols of adventure and freedom.
Budugu’s family was a vibrant bunch. His parents, Radha and Gopalam, provided love and guidance, while his grandmother, Bamma, offered wisdom and warmth. His unmarried uncle, Baabai, added a touch of quirky humor to the household. And who could forget his neighbor, Laavupaati Pakkinti Pinnigaru, and her daughter, C Gaana Pasoonamba, the object of Budugu’s innocent affection?
Budugu’s first adventures began in the serial “Budugu – Chichula Pidugu,” published by Andhra Pathrika. This autobiographical work allowed Ramana to share his own childhood memories and weave them with imaginative tales. The stories were later compiled into two volumes, capturing the hearts of readers across generations.
Adding to Budugu’s charm were the illustrations by Bapu, a renowned Telugu filmmaker. Bapu’s talent lay in capturing the essence of each character through their expressive eyes and lively gestures. His art breathed life into Budugu’s world, making him a beloved figure in Andhra Pradesh.
