TheatreDirected by Mahesh Bhatt and produced in 1998 in Hindi by Madhu Ramesh Behl under the Rose Movies Combines label, Angaaray is an action movie. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Nagarjuna, Pooja Bhatt, and Sonali Bendre. Aadesh Shrivastava and Anu Malik are the composers.
The American movie State of Grace served as inspiration for it. In his 2003 picture Footpath, directed by Vikram Bhatt and starring Emraan Hashmi and Aftab Shivdasani, Mahesh Bhatt once more employed the same concept.
Plot
Mumbai’s police commissioner, Vinod Talwar (Naresh Suri), approaches Amar Mehra (Akshay Kumar), a police officer located in Bangalore, and gives him the assignment to go undercover to find and murder Khanna’s killer(s). Amar quickly discovers that Raja Lokhande, his childhood friend (Nagarjuna), is the guilty party. Another name for him is King Nag.
Two more of Amar’s childhood pals, Jaggu Lokhande (Paresh Rawal) and Surya (Irfan Kamal), are also employed by prominent gangster Lala Roshan Lal (Gulshan Grover). Taking advantage of their camaraderie, he too joins their gang.
Amar, who is Surya’s sister, rekindles his romantic relationship with Pooja (Pooja Bhatt), his childhood sweetheart. Pooja has cut ties with her brother and pals because she aspires to live a moral life. She can be changed, Amar assures her. In the meantime, following a bad meeting, Lala begins to suspect Amar of being a gang mole.
When Jaggu approaches Amar, he disputes it with Raja’s help. To prove himself, Jaggu then orders him to kill a police inspector. Amar concurs, and Pooja pulls away from him out of rage. Amar has proven his worth as he shoots the police inspector in front of the gang.
Nevertheless, it turns out that the shootout was staged. Amar is confronted by Vinod, who informs him that since Raja and the others are his boyhood friends, he is not killing them. Amar is still adamant that he can change them and that Lala is the only one who is truly at fault.
In the meantime, Surya requests that Pooja tie a rakhi on his wrist in an effort to patch things up. Lala’s brother enters at the same moment, lusting for her. Surya becomes enraged and gives him a severe beating. Lala hides at home, but Jaggu summons him outside as Amar and Raja leave to check on the cops. As it happens, Jaggu kills Surya after betraying him.
Raja kills Lala’s brother because he is now ravenous for his blood. Pooja finds out that Amar is an undercover police officer. Amar confronts Raja after learning that he killed Lala. The cops, however, arrive just in time to shoot Raja as his lover Roma passes out.
After disclosing that he is a police officer, Amar begs to drive Roma to the hospital as Raja flees. Raja approaches Amar in a fit of rage and is ready to murder him. Raja agrees to submit after Roma is discovered to be pregnant after Amar calms him down. Meanwhile, Lala informs Jaggu that he can keep Raja hidden but that he needs to bring Amar to him.
Raja refuses to let up even after Jaggu visits their home and provides him tickets to leave Mumbai. Amar then admits that he was aware that Jaggu was the one who had Surya killed, to Jaggu’s furious protests that the police are untrustworthy.
Jaggu acknowledges his serious errors and consents to give up as well. Nevertheless, Amar and Raja hurry outside to put an end to Lala’s troops as they begin attacking their location with fire bombs. After taking a bullet to the knee, Raja orders Amar to find Lala no matter what. Amar follows Lala till he is caught. After killing Lala there, he calls for Vinod and the cops to show up.
Finally, it is revealed that Raja and Jaggu, who consented to be police informants, would serve terms of 10 and 7 years in prison, respectively. Amar is being questioned by police while in their custody.
