TheatreRangam, originally a Tamil movie called “Ko,” is a political action thriller directed by K. V. Anand and written by Anand along with Suresh and Balakrishnan. The film stars Jiiva, Ajmal Ameer, Karthika Nair (in her major Tamil debut), and Piaa Bajpai in the lead roles, with Prakash Raj and Kota Srinivasa Rao in supporting roles.
The story follows Ashwin (Jiiva), a photojournalist working for Dina Anjal, as he covers the Tamil Nadu State Election. The core plot is reportedly based on the 2009 movie “State of Play.”
The film’s music was composed by Harris Jayaraj, with cinematography by Richard M. Nathan and editing by Anthony. Released on 22 April 2011, the film received mostly positive reviews and became a commercial success. It was dubbed in Telugu as “Rangam” and released on the same date, also achieving box office success.
“Rangam” won two Filmfare Awards South, three Vijay Awards, two SIIMA Awards, and four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. It was awarded the Chennai Times Best Film Award for 2011 based on an online poll conducted by The Times of India. The film was remade in Bengali as “Kanamachi” (2013). A standalone sequel titled “Ko 2” was released in 2016.
