Vyjayanthimala, born on 13 August 1933, is a revered Indian actress, dancer, and parliamentarian, widely regarded as one of the finest in Indian cinema. Throughout her illustrious career, she has received numerous accolades, including five Filmfare Awards and two BFJA Awards.
Her cinematic journey began at the age of 16 with the Tamil film “Vaazhkai” (1949) and continued with the Telugu film “Jeevitham” (1950). However, it was her Hindi cinema debut in the social guidance film “Bahar” (1951) that marked her breakthrough, followed by the romantic hit “Nagin” (1954).
Vyjayanthimala gained critical acclaim for her role in the period drama “Devdas” (1955), where she portrayed Chandramukhi. Her performance was hailed as her magnum opus, earning her a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress, which she declined, asserting her leading role equal to that of her co-star Suchitra Sen.
The 1960s saw her starring in notable films like the crime drama “Gunga Jumna” (1961), for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and the musical romantic drama “Sangam” (1964).
Venturing beyond conventional roles, Vyjayanthimala reinvented her image, earning praise for her performance in the historical drama “Amrapali” (1966). Following this, she achieved success with films such as the swashbuckler “Suraj” (1966), the heist thriller “Jewel Thief” (1967), and the art film “Hatey Bazarey” (1967).
Her diverse roles in films like the action drama “Sunghursh” (1968) and the epic “Prince” (1969) showcased her versatility.
In 1968, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor. After a leading role in “Ganwaar” (1970), Vyjayanthimala gracefully stepped back from acting.
Beyond her acting career, she gained acclaim for her Bharata Natyam performances, receiving the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest recognition for practicing artists in India.
