Shivaji Sawant was an Indian Marathi novelist who lived from August 31, 1940, to September 18, 2002. Because he wrote the well-known Marathi novel Mrutyunjay, he is known as Mrutyunjaykaar, which translates to “Author of Mrutyunjay.” In 1994, he was the first Marathi author to get the Moortidevi Award.
Karna, one of the main characters in the epic Mahabharat, served as the inspiration for his work Mrutyunjay (English: Victory Over Death). This novel won multiple awards and plaudits and was translated into Hindi (1974), English (1989), Kannada (1990), Gujarati (1991), and Malayalam (1995). His 1980 book Chhava is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji.
Since 1995, he has served as the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad’s vice president. In 1983, he served as president of the Baroda Sahitya Sammelan. In addition to writing on history, he also wrote about politics.
He was born into a modest farming family in the Maharashtra village of Ajara, which is located in the Kolhapur district. ‘Vyankatrao High School Ajara’ was where he completed his studies. After 20 years of teaching at Rajaram Prashala in Kolhapur, he spent six years in Pune (1974–1980) as an editor for the Maharashtra education department’s monthly magazine Lokshikshan.
