Thiyagu is a highly esteemed Tamil actor, known for his frequent appearances in comedy films and his versatility in portraying various roles in the Tamil film industry. Born on February 5, 1958, Thiyagu, at the age of 65, has made significant contributions to Tamil cinema. Notably, he is the grandson of Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai, a renowned Carnatic music violinist from Tamil Nadu, India.
Commencing his career, Thiyagu initially took on protagonist roles in films, showcasing his acting prowess. Notable works during this period include his performances in the Tamil films “Oru Thalai Ragam” in 1980 and “Palaivana Solai” in 1981. Transitioning into the late 80s and early 90s, he explored antagonist roles and gained popularity as a character artist.
His remarkable performances garnered him several awards, contributing to his standing in the industry. Noteworthy films from this era include “Aagaya Gangai” and “Oomai Vizhigal.” Additionally, he ventured into Kannada cinema with the film “Premaloka.” Throughout the 90s, Thiyagu continued to make a mark in Tamil cinema with films like “My Dear Marthandan,” “Kizhakku Vasal,” “Raasaiyya,” “Vanaja Girija,” “Dhinamum Ennai Gavani,” “Irattai Roja,” and “Kumbakonam Gopalu,” where he played significant lead roles.
In the 2000s, Thiyagu remained active in the industry, contributing to films such as “Simmasanam,” “Thavasi,” “Gemini,” “Saamy Daas,” “Imsai Arasan,” “Kuselan,” “Singam,” “Mappillai,” and “Singam 2.” Recently, he was seen in the romantic comedy film “Adhu Vera Idhu Vera” alongside Varshan, Imman Annachi, Sanyathara, and others. Beyond his acting career, Thiyagu has been associated with the political party DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) since 1983.
However, after 28 years of dedicated service, he decided to resign, citing a lack of recognition for his efforts within the party. Thiyagu’s initial attraction to the DMK was fueled by his admiration for Kalaignar’s writings. Despite actively campaigning for the DMK in various elections, he felt that his contributions went unnoticed. The turning point came during the centennial celebration of his grandfather, Karunanidhi, where promises made to honor his grandfather were unfulfilled. Dissatisfied with the unmet commitments, Thiyagu made the decision to resign from the DMK in the year 2011.
