Sunitha Sarathy, an acclaimed Indian vocalist, showcased her versatile talent in various music genres, including Indian contemporary and Western classical music, along with gospel singing in church choirs. Her journey in the entertainment industry began after winning the “Virgin Voice Choice” contest in 2000, marking her debut into film playback in 2002.
Born into a family immersed in Western classical music, Sarathy’s early exposure to choirs since the age of four, under her mother Susheela Sarathy’s guidance, paved the way for her musical prowess. She gained recognition for her performances in church choirs in Madras, showcasing her talents in Latin devotionals and classical compositions.
Her victory in the “Virgin Voice Choice” contest garnered attention, and she entered the playback singing domain. Her debut in Tamil cinema was in the film Yei! Nee Romba Azhagey Irruke, where she guest-sang portions of the song “Ini Naanum Naanillai” alongside Srinivas and Sujatha Mohan. Over time, Sarathy amassed a repertoire of around 200 film songs across multiple languages and excelled in Western music genres like classical, jazz, soul, R&B, neo-soul, and gospel.
Noteworthy milestones in her career include her breakthrough solo song “Thoodu Varuma” in the Tamil film Kaakha Kaakha and her impactful contributions to the soundtracks of films like Yuva / Aaytha Ezhuthu, Anniyan, Polladhavan, Vallavan, Don 2, and Happy Days. Her musical prowess extended beyond films, recording “Warriors in Peace” for the Mandarin film Warriors of Heaven and Earth, composed by A. R. Rahman.
