Biography:

Rahul Bose, born to Rupen and Kumud Bose on July 27, 1967, had his first taste of acting at the tender age of six, playing the lead in the school play, Tom, the Piper’s Son. Introduced to sports by his mother, he developed a keen interest in boxing and rugby union, alongside cricket under the coaching of former India cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.

A graduate of Mumbai’s Cathedral and John Connon School, Bose faced rejection from several American universities before attending Sydenham College. His college days were marked by active participation in the rugby team and winning a silver medal in boxing at the Western India Championships. Following his mother’s demise in 1987, Bose took on a role as a copywriter at Rediffusion, later rising to the position of advertising creative director. His full-time acting career began after the release of his debut film, “English, August.”

Bose initiated his acting journey on the Mumbai stage in plays like Rahul D’Cunha’s “Topsy Turvey” and “Are There Tigers in the Congo?”. His entry into films came with Dev Benegal’s “English, August,” where he portrayed civil servant Agastya Sen, earning international recognition for the film. Subsequently, Bose explored television with roles in India’s first English-language serial, “A Mouthful of Sky,” and co-hosting BBC World’s “Style!” with Laila Rouass.

In 1998, he featured in Kaizad Gustad’s “Bombay Boys” and starred in Dev Benegal’s “Split Wide Open.” Bose’s immersive preparation for his role involved living in Mumbai’s slums for two weeks. Despite controversies surrounding “Split Wide Open,” Bose received acclaim, winning the Silver Screen Award for Best Asian Actor at the 2000 Singapore International Film Festival.

His notable roles include the canceled BBC adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s “Midnight’s Children,” the villain role in “Thakshak,” and the science fiction TV series “Captain Vyom.” In 2001, Bose made his directorial debut with “Everybody Says I’m Fine!,” winning the runner-up John Schlesinger Award for best directorial debut at the 2003 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Bose continued to diversify his roles, starring in Aparna Sen’s “Mr. and Mrs. Iyer” in 2002, followed by mainstream Bollywood films like “Jhankaar Beats” and “Mumbai Matinee.” His second collaboration with Konkona Sen Sharma, “15 Park Avenue,” won the 2006 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English.

Venturing into romantic comedy with “Pyaar Ke Side Effects,” Bose showcased a unique narrative style, breaking the fourth wall. The film’s success marked a shift into mainstream Bollywood, with subsequent films like “Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam” in 2008. Bose maintained a balance between mainstream and arthouse films, starring in Bengali films like “Anuranan,” “Kaalpurush,” and “Antaheen.”

In 2010, Bose appeared in Deepa Mehta’s “Midnight’s Children” and played the villain in the Tamil film “Vishwaroopam.” He directed, produced, and acted in the 2017 biopic “Poorna” about the youngest girl to climb Mount Everest.
