Prabhu Ganesan, born on 25 December 1956, professionally known as Prabhu, is a multifaceted Indian actor, businessman, and film producer predominantly active in Tamil cinema. The son of the esteemed actor Sivaji Ganesan, Prabhu is widely recognized as Ilaya Thilagam. His career spans over 220 films in leading and supporting roles across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada cinema.
After his debut in Sangili (1982), Prabhu earned accolades, including the Best Actor award from the Tamil Nadu State for his performance in Chinna Thambi. Following his schooling at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School in Bangalore, he immersed himself in film production as an executive producer, mentored by his uncle V. C. Shanmugam. Initially hesitant about Prabhu pursuing acting, his father, Sivaji Ganesan, eventually supported him as film-makers extended offers.
Prabhu’s acting journey commenced with Sangili (1982), evolving from a supporting role to starring in commercially successful ventures like Pudhiya Sangamam and Kozhi Koovuthu. He strategically navigated his career, opting for diverse roles and avoiding films alongside his father. Notable successes in the late 1980s included Aruvadai Naal (1986), Paalaivana Rojakkal (1986), Guru Sishyan (1988), Agni Natchathiram (1988), and En Thangachi Padichava (1988). Collaborations with director P. Vasu in Chinna Thambi (1991) and Senthamizh Pattu (1992) garnered him additional acclaim and awards.
In the late 1990s, Prabhu experienced a downturn in his career, prompting a shift from village do-gooder roles to family-friendly scripts in the early 2000s. Transitioning to supporting roles, he contributed to hits like Vasool Raja MBBS (2004) and Chandramukhi (2005). Noteworthy performances followed in films like Unakkum Enakkum, Thaamirabharani, Ayan, Billa (2007), Kanthaswamy (2009), Raavanan (2010), and 3 (2012).
Prabhu celebrated his 200th film milestone with Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum (2016), a romantic comedy produced by his nephew, Dushyanth Ramkumar. In 2019, director Sakthi Chidambaram attempted a sequel, Charlie Chaplin 2, featuring Prabhu in a role distinct from the original.
Married to Punitha since 1982, Prabhu has two children, Vikram Prabhu, an actor who made his debut in the 2012 film Kumki, and Aishwarya Prabhu. Notably, Prabhu had a live-in relationship with actress Khushbu while still married to Punitha, resulting in a short-lived marriage in 1993.
