Phil Coulson
Biography:
Agent Phillip J. “Phil” Coulson, portrayed and voiced by Clark Gregg, is a fictional character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He serves as a senior agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a longtime ally of Nick Fury.
Coulson is mortally wounded by Loki during an attack on the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, an event that motivates the Avengers to come together. Later, Fury has him revived using Kree blood, allowing Coulson to continue his service with S.H.I.E.L.D. He leads a specialized team alongside Melinda May and develops a father-daughter bond with Daisy Johnson. After helping to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. following Hydra’s infiltration, saving Earth from threats, and briefly becoming Ghost Rider through a pact with a demon, he retires to Tahiti with May, where he passes away again.
Afterward, a duplicate known as Sarge—created by a monolith and inhabited by the Incan god Pachakutiq—appears. Following Sarge’s defeat, Coulson is brought back once more as a Life Model Decoy (L.M.D.) made from a digital backup of his mind, as well as genetic memories of Sarge and May. With this second resurrection, he aids in stopping the Chronicoms from conquering an alternate timeline before choosing to explore the world in his flying car, Lola.
Coulson plays a significant role in the MCU’s Infinity Saga, appearing in five feature films, multiple series, and Marvel One-Shots—most prominently The Avengers (2012) and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2020). Alternate versions of him also appear across the multiverse, including the animated series What If…? (2021), with Gregg reprising the role.
Beyond the MCU, Coulson has been incorporated into Marvel Comics. Initially modeled on Clark Gregg and portrayed as a loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agent allied with Deadpool, his comic version was later reimagined as a villain after being resurrected by Mephisto. In this darker role, he commands the Squadron Supreme of America and serves as the main antagonist of the Heroes Reborn storyline.
In his backstory, Coulson is the son of Robert and Julie Coulson. Inspired by World War II heroes Captain America and Peggy Carter, he eventually joins S.H.I.E.L.D., the agency Carter founded, and works closely with Fury, John Garrett, and May.
In 1995, he accompanies Fury in investigating an unusual woman linked to a Blockbuster Video store incident, later revealed to be Carol Danvers. When a Skrull impersonates him, Fury realizes the deception, solidifying his trust in the real Coulson. This mission ultimately sets Fury on the path to forming the Avengers Initiative.
Later, Coulson leads Project T.A.H.I.T.I., a program designed to use alien blood to revive fallen Avengers. He eventually shuts it down after witnessing its destructive psychological effects on test subjects.
Coulson goes on to play key roles in MCU events: debriefing Tony Stark after his captivity, attempting to arrest Obadiah Stane, investigating Mjolnir’s arrival in New Mexico, befriending Thor after the Destroyer’s defeat, overseeing Stark’s behavior, and aiding in Steve Rogers’ revival. His death at Loki’s hands during the Battle of New York becomes the emotional catalyst that inspires the Avengers to unite and save the world.
