Selvakumar embarked on his career as a journalist before becoming associated with film director S. A. Chandrasekhar. Through this connection, he eventually became the press relations officer for Chandrasekhar’s son, Vijay. In 2003, Selvakumar briefly ventured into film production, funding T. P. Gajendran’s family drama “Banda Paramasivam” (2003), which was later remade as “Housefull 2” (2012) in Hindi.
In January 2012, Selvakumar initiated his directorial journey, announcing his intent to cast Nakul, Shiva, Santhanam, and Premji Amaren as the main actors. Priyamani was also reported to have joined the cast, though no official announcement was made. However, in October 2012, the project resurfaced with a new ensemble featuring Vinay Rai, Aravind Akash, Sathyan, and Premji, while Raai Laxmi took on the lead actress role. Inspired by “The Hangover” (2009), Selvakumar’s film “Onbadhula Guru” (2013) commenced shooting in October 2012 and hit theaters in early 2013 to unfavorable reviews. Rediff.com gave it a 2 out of 5 rating, noting that the film appeared to be a compilation of comedic scenes without a strong storyline.
In 2014, Selvakumar began working on the production of “Puli” (2015), directed by Chimbu Deven and starring Vijay in the lead. Unfortunately, the movie garnered negative reviews and faced commercial disappointment. Following this, his subsequent film, “Pokkiri Raja” (2016), received mixed reviews upon its release.
